Got myself an Orange hazelnut pinwheel pastry as recommended by one of the staff, and it was just delicious with the right amount of sweetness and orange flavour. Paired it with their regular latte and enjoyed my time there.Worth every penny!
A week in advance I ordered a cake for my son’s sixth birthday for pickup on Sunday, the day of his birthday. At noon on Sunday the manager called and left a message telling me the store was closing four hours early due to a company picnic and that I needed to stop by before 2PM if I wanted the cake. Unfortunately we were about to see a movie downtown and couldn’t make that time work, and when I called back to explain the manager said I could pick it up the next day or receive a refund. When I asked the manager why I wasn’t given more advanced notice (I could have picked up the cake in the morning or the day before) and explained that today is my son’s birthday he unsympathetically responded that it was out of his control. Given this experience I will be avoiding ordering from Macrina for special events in the future which is a huge bummer for our family given we love their cakes and pastries.
the pastries are amazing. the coffee is not great, and the drink menu is pretty limited.
Absolutely fantastic bakery, I think we went here every day during our Seattle trip. Standouts were the chocolate cornetto, jam biscuits, and coffee!
Dear Macrina, Good coffee in paper cups even though I’m sitting in your place of business drinking it. Seriously?? That’s just unacceptable. I’m not picniking. I’m not driving to Bellevue and need it to fit in my cupholder. I’m drinking an espresso drink that’s widely viewed as an expensive indulgence and your handing it to me in a paper to go cup? Combine that with an unsanitary seating area with food literally strewn across the floor, tables and benches with no apparent effort being made toward basic public hygiene and it is not a good look for a long established business. I know the go to excuse these days of “we’re understaffed“ will inevitably be trotted out but at some point you have to draw the line and do whatever it takes to maintain a decent standard of service. Macrina is WELL past that point. Even the once ebullient staff seem to have given up. It’s depressing to see a beloved institution deteriorate so visibly.
We came in for a loaf of sliced bread. Used their tap machine to pay for the bread + 15% tip. The cashier claims the charge never went thru even though it showed up as "Approved" on their point of sale device and on my bank charges. She insisted having me pay for the bread again even though I had already paid for it. I asked why I have to pay for it twice to which she replied she wasn't sure if the charge went thru (despite her point of sale device and my bank app showing the transaction). I ended up leaving the bakery without taking the bread out of the store. So now I have a bank charge for an item I never took out of the store. This outcome though is better than have 2 charges for 1 item and then being upset about the store asking us to pay twice for the item. We were treated differently from other paying customers at this store -- not sure why. Maybe it is because we are Asian and do not speak English as well as we should. How much clearer do we have to be to tell the store we already paid when the point of sale system says "Approved" and we have a bank charge on our statement? Won't be back and wish we never walked in. We're better off buying their products at Ballard market where we are treated like other paying customers.
An outstanding array of breads and other baked goods, sandwiches, salads and excellent coffee. Service was fast and friendly. Plenty of seating inside and out.
One of my favorite bakeries and the top 3 in Seattle to me!
They have everything you want in a bakery and top quality! There's a nice space to enjoy your meal over conversation or on a laptop. There is a tap with sparkeling water! Also - If you are searching for a loaf of bread for the week, this is the place.
The server at the counter looked at me and then suddenly walked away when it was my time to order. I stood there perplexed and then another person came over to help. Their version of a biscuit was super dry, topped with a very rubbery jam. I asked for a hot mocha, it was served barely lukewarm. It’s not worth a 2nd try.
