This is a hidden gem! We loved everything we ordered. It’s well seasoned, cooked to perfection food. Very comforting with a homey feel. Would love to try the eel clay pot next time.
3/19/22: Really loved this space. Staff was friendly and food very good. Singapore noodles, fried chicken, crab fried rice, chili won ton, and calamari.
It is not hard to find good,. interesting food in the ID. What is very hard, almost impossible, to find is a place with character, charm, and genuinely good service. Gan Bei is the epitome of all of these things. The signature style bar in Seattle is tiny, and this spot def falls into that. About 8 barstools, 3 tables in the front, and another 2 in a small back room, this is the definition of cozy.Didn't try any cocktails, but there are a couple drafts; local and the obligatory Sapporo, but they have Steigl Earlier so I will always have a go to beverage.First time I tried the wings, the wontons in chili oil, and the crispy rice noodles. All were solid, and the wontons were great! Finally a place that gives the proper amount of chili oil (it should look like soup).Def will be back to try the specialty fried chicken and gravy. They look to have some sold specials daily; switching from drink to food night by night.
Only had drinks, but the prices were fair, the drinks were delicious, the service was solid and the food smelled delicious. I'll have to go back for food.
I decided to make a drive to the International District after work and just grab a bite anywhere. Gan Bei was the first place that caught my eye based on the menu. I walked in on a Tuesday night and the bartender told me to grab a seat anywhere. He came out with water and a menu and a few minutes later the waitress came to take my order for Wonton Noodle Soup and the Chicken and Gravy Meal. My meal came out quickly. The wonton soup was a good size portion with lots of wontons and a hearty broth. I couldn't quite put my fingers in the spices they used in the gravy dipping sauce for the chicken, but overall it was good. The chicken was crispy, not super greasy at all, rice was fresh and someone's dog came by to check on me every 5 minutes. The environment is very laid back and the people here are nice.
Some of the best East Asian food in Seattle (this is specifically Cantonese focused). Go for the XO rice rolls, chili wontons and hand shredded chicken to start, and share the cured pork claypot rice as a main. This claypot rice is insanely good.
Chili Wings and Wontons
Enjoyed the chili wings and wontons.
Both the food and the drinks are delicious. Not over priced and the food portions were huge! My favorite part of this place was the chili sauce. They had 2 different kinds and they were both pretty tasty.
I've been there twice and it's absolutely pleasant experiences. Staff are super friendly. People sitting at the bar are chill and seem to know the staff well. The food is absolutely great. I ordered the yellow curry fried noodles (黄咖喱炒面), hand-shredded chicken(手撕鸡), mini rice rolls (虾米肠粉), clay pot eel rice (鳝鱼煲仔饭) and stir-fried veggies (炒通菜). Every single dish is delicious. Even my boyfriend, who's a non-Asian eater, liked them a lot. You can clearly tell the material they're using is fresh. The cooking is very well-done. I'm not a Cantonese but I can still tell the effort they put into hand-shredded chicken, to make the chicken skin juicy, soft and taste like jelly. This place is the only place I found so far in Seattle that has eel rice, and taste so delicious.I highly recommend this place to anyone who's interested Chinese, especially Cantonese food. It was a surprise to me why it's not crowded already, given the quality of everything.
