Honestly reading a lot of the reviews for here makes me wonder if we went to the same restaurant because we had a great experience. I chose this place for my birthday lunch because we had one where we used to live in South Carolina and I loved their sweet potato roll. This location is actually a lot cheaper than the one we were used to. Downside, they have no yum yum sauce which would have upset me but their version of the sweet potato roll has an orange glaze sauce. We will definitely be back!
I really do love the food every time I go, but my biggest problem is that they have really slow service. Whenever I go to the restaurant it always takes them about five or 10 minutes to get their attention to even be seated. It also takes so long for the food to be made regardless if it’s busy or not. I really wish I could give a five star review because I really love the food but the service needs to be a lot better.
I can't say enough good things. For some reason, it is never the first place we think of going. I guess the location next to the movie theater throws us off.I've never had a meal less than great. Service is good, the drinks are done well and the food is always top notch. I hate going to a good Chinese restaurant and just get the same thing as what I have delivered to the house. The curry beef was great.I wish I knew more about the food and maybe I would be more adventurous.Go there try something, have a great time.
My husband's meal was fine and he likes it there. My crab roll was sandy and the very rude waitress said that is because of the crab. Could not eat it. Never an apolgy or discount because I did not eat but one piece. I will never go here again
Last time I visited the place, I really enjoyed it, but I think tonight was an off night. I ordered a shrimp tempura with white rice. When I opened my box after going home, there was nothing but confusion. I never got my white rice. Instead, I got a clear container with some transparent brown liquid inside..I have no clue what it was..I had a big chunk of fried broccoli (It was actually pretty good), a flattened, fried circle. I couldn't identify what it was until I tasted it..it was a tomato. There was what appeared to be onion rings until I tried it. It was not an onion, but some sort of vegetable that I couldn't identify. Maybe squash..The tempura shrimp had a great crisp to it, but very bland. None of the items were seasoned at all. It was very busy, so I assume they didn't have the time to put into it. It still could've been better.
This is collectively the worst food I've had from them yet. I've never had a bad experience with them which is why I'm not giving it 3 instead. I ordered online for take out. I got a salmon roll(not the one I wanted but that was on me ordering wrong, not them) which was not up to their usual standard. The brown rice was cold(I got there only 5 minutes after my scheduled pick up time so it should not have been cold). The egg drop soup didn't taste as good. Also they forgot my chopsticks which I did pay for. I know it's only 25 cents so I'm not upset about that. But if I pay for something, I would like it. Hoping my next visit with them is better.
Ichiban wants to be a Japanese restaurant, I think, but they do too good a job on Chinese food—and the entire Peninsula has been suffering for good Chinese food since Steve Hsieh died and the Ming Gate in Hampton shut down a-many years ago now.So I have I think always ordered Chinese food at Ichiban—and usually Peking Duck, although today the price is through the roof at $49.00, AND apparently now you have to make an ADVANCE RESERVATION if you want to order it.Which I found out Monday night, January 10, 2022, when Sheila and I arrived hungry and cold and grateful to find a good restaurant open on a Monday night. Also on the menu BUT NOT REQUIRING AN ADVANCE RESERVATION is Ichiban’s House Special Crispy Duck with Chinese Vegetables, with sides of fried rice and wonton soup. So I ordered that, and Sheila ordered Moo Shu Chicken, which was accompanied only by the traditional pancakes. All the food was very good, and it was comforting on a cold night to be dining once more at Ichiban, which has always proved dependable, and occasionally inspired. I sense they are painfully understaffed during the plague, but the waiter raced around most energetically, refilling our cups of very good green tea twice during the course of the evening. I only noticed my deep-fried Crispy Duck chunks were warm rather than hot when served, but Sheila’s Moo Shu Chicken was quite hot, so that was all right! Both dishes were quite generous in size, but I was very hungry and ate everything on my plate. Sheila was satisfied to take half of her food home for later.Mention was made by another reviewer of the “old-fashioned” interior, so I did take one photograph to give you an idea of the present dining area layout. Ichiban is scrupulously clean and all the staff wear their masks as if they were well aware of the value of keeping themselves and their customers healthy. A nice place to visit!
The place was nice. It took a rather extended amount of time between the egg drop soup and the entree. Didn't get a lot of duck sauce. Community dining at the next table. They didn't make us wear a mask or anything. Very good food.
We went to celebrate my son's birthday one day after Thanksgiving. We saw comments about the slow service so we were happy to be seated upon arrival. It didn't matter that the restaurant was not busy because we waited well over 30 minutes to get our drinks and appetizers. Not a good start. The menu is vast and a combination of Chinese, Japanese, and Thai dishes. I ordered duck and it was excellent (Chinese), my son ordered sushi and it was good, my wife and daughter ordered tempura and Japanese appetizers that were not anything special, and others in my party ordered Drunken Noodles with chicken which were only partially eaten (not good at all!). Summary: Slow service, average food, and high prices.
The food is phenomenal every time I go! The service is also amazing. The variety of sushi makes us so happy. And I can never say no to the orange chicken. It’s perfectly crispy and not overly sweet. The sweet tea is even good. The atmosphere is very nice too. They have a more formal dining area as well if you have a larger party or want to do something nice there.
