This is, in everyone's opinion who has eaten there, THE best sushi restaurant in Hampton Roads...possibly Virginia. Mr. Lee is an amazing chef and very friendly and welcoming. The staff is helpful and courteous. But most of all, the sushi is phenomenal and plentiful. Sure, they can make a Philadelphia Roll and a California Roll if you're that kind of vanilla...but I recommend you try the scallops appetizer and the Sushi Popper roll. Live a little! You will not be disappointed!
Hands down my favorite restaurant in Virginia Beach. I go here every time I come home and it’s always amazing. The owner can customize your sushi any way you want it. He also cares about your experience and makes sure you get your money’s worth. For example… The last time I went, my friend wanted to get 3 rolls for dinner. The owner said to get 2 rolls and let him know how he feels after eating them. After finishing those 2 rolls, my friend was full. The owner comes back to say, “I know you only needed 2 rolls and I’m happy you didn’t spend money on another one.” Most other restaurants wouldn’t have taken that kind of care for your dining experience or make sure you didn’t spend more money than necessary.Highly recommended!!
This place has the most creative sushi that I have ever run into. Lee can take your order when sitting at the bar and will make your sushi any way that you like it. This restaurant is all about good service and making their customers feel comfortable and happy. Lee took great pains to be sure that my daughter and I enjoyed our sushi. We explored the menu and had Sushi Poppers, jalapeño stuffed with cream cheese and rolled in rice, then delicately deep fried for a crispy coating and then covered with spicy tuna. Next we enjoyed sushi with cooked salmon and crab cake on top. The Caterpillar. Finally the Lobster G2G roll with spicy crawfish, seaweed salad, mango and strawberry on top! What a great treat. Lee made us feel at home like a regular in this cozy neighborhood restaurant. This is a great place to grab some lunch, have a casual date, or dinner of some great sushi recipes. We’ll be back again!
Update: I have been here several times since my initial review, and it's still amazing. The sushi chef remembers us, and is still very happy to tell you anything about the menu, including the contents of the rolls. My family and I will continue to visit, and enjoy the awesome food!(End update)The sushi is amazing, and some of the non-sushi items are, as well. The rolls are pretty large, please don't just order a bunch of rolls unless you're sharing with a bunch of people! The sushi chef is very friendly, and will ask questions to give recommendations on what to get.All the rolls are made upon order, so feel free to customize them to your liking.I think the only thing I wasn't big on, is the contents of the rolls are not on the menu. However, they are written on papers along the walls. If you like sushi, I suggest giving them a try. It's a nice little place with a lot of flavor.
Tried it with some of my friends last night and wow… we all agreed best sushi around! Everything was fresh and the rolls where Huge. Everyone was so nice and helpful! Definitely will be returning
All the sushi got got was pretty good . Their prices were ok. The almond tatta I didn’t like too much. I didn’t like how they left such huge spears of cucumber in my rolls. I also found a hair on one of my pieces. My boyfriend and I have locs so I know for sure the hair wasn’t mine.
Been going to see Mr Lee for over 15 years. Not only does he take pride in his craft he takes pride in knowing his customer base. It's been 4 or 5 years since we last saw him. He still remembers us every time we walk through that door or talk on the phone. Such as the point to this review as we had friends in Va Beach this weekend. I made arrangements earlier in the week to call him and place a to go order that was going to be delivered 7 hours away. Once again he did not disappoint. Thank you as always.
Great sushi! For a starter my husband and I had hot sake and ginger salads. The hot sake was very good and the ginger salads were different, which made us sceptical at first. The ginger dressing is creamy, but after tasting it we loved it and it was a great ginger salad! Then we ordered the sushi. A Phillie roll, tuna roll, salmon gtg, popper, and mama tortilla. I am the type of person that would normally go for hibachi or ramen at sushi restaurants because I'm not a big sushi fan, if I do ord r sushi it would be a crunchy roll (fried shrimp roll topped with crab mix), but my husband loves sushi! So I was going to try the sushi at This Old House since it was our first time. I was blown away by the taste and quality! My favorite was the mama tortilla since I love crispy salmon skin, second would be the popper roll which the poppers wasn't very spicy (I'm sure that may change depending on the season) and the spicy salmon was chunky which was very good! The salmon gtg was even good to me even though it was large pieces of salmon, because of the quality fish! Can't wait to go back! Our server nice, funny, knowledgeable, and even warned us that their rolls are larger than most places(as in two salads and 5 rolls for two people may be too much), which we really appreciated!
friendly service, creatively excellent cuisine!
As always Mr Lee’s sushi is a real treat. Famous and unique rolls. He created a new one for my friend today called the Byrdman with octopus and special sauce. You can’t go wrong with this old house.
