EDIT: recently tried their pogacas, blueberry lemon tart, and light rye bread too. They're all amazing! Their light rye bread is moist inside and has a sesame crust, one of the best breads I've had ?. This place won't let you down.Excellent wood fired bakery. Their pastries are one of the best I've ever had - flaky and mouth watering flavor combinations. Tried the lamb borek, greens & feta tart, fig & cheese croissant, and sour cherry pistachio pastry - all are top quality pastries. I'd eat them everyday. We also purchased a pide flat bread and whole rye bread. The taste and smell of both breads are out of this world. Will definitely try other breads.Online orders and pick up only - wasn't an issue for us. You need to text your name when you arrive and they bring your order outside. I'd prefer picking up at a specific time rather than waiting a long line anyways. Enjoying the pastries at tbe Libby Hill park is a decent option if the weather permits.Would highly recommend ordering from this bakery and for sure will return.

Sub Rosa in my opinion is the best food establishment in all of Richmond. The quality of their croissants is unrivaled. I've been all over the east coast and never have I had croissants as good as theirs. Deserves all of the accolades and is undoubtedly the best bakery in town. I just wished they were able to produce more baked goods because the demand is so high and supply being so low. Will always visit whenever I'm in town.

Bes place for eat cakes and drink coffee?

This place left me with so many questions and I couldn’t understand why it was so customer unfriendly. Do not waste your time. If the product is so amazing it does not give you an excuse to have literally no customer service, make it difficult to get a hold of the product, provide no space for you to enjoy the product. I’m so thankful I went to Whisk right after leaving this awful place and enjoyed every bit of experience I had for the first time at that bakery (Whisk). I’ve lived in large cities my whole life and I’ve never experienced anything like Subrosa.1) I do not understand why you have a bakery open for business that you are not allowed to step foot in?2) I don’t understand how you run a business where the customer is not allowed in the shop to look at the goods and everything has to be ordered online in advance yet you’re online platform freezes making the experience yet even more user unfriendly?3) Why is there a tip included in the bill when you receive absolutely no service nor did you even step foot into the shop? Am I tipping you for the inconvenience of standing out on the street in the cold waiting a half an hour for you to bring me my pastry in a paper bag?4) If the online platform even allows you to go through with the purchase of your food why then do you have to take the extra effort to text them to let them know you’re here? Should they not have your food readily available and be looking for you or have a system set up to where you’re allowed to retrieve your own food?5) Once again I am perplexed by the tip on the bill when there is no customer interaction whatsoever… You’re doing the ordering… You’re doing the purchase transaction… There’s not one person there to assist you or to provide any type of service.

This place is amazing. I was first suggested this bakery visiting a local friend a couple years ago, and have since been unable to NOT swing by hoping for my favorite pastries to be in stock whenever I’m in town. The things you love will almost always sell out, making them even more of a hot commodity — and I’m glad their price shows for it because it’s absolutely worth it; I’m grateful they have managed to keep going through the pandemic when other small shops have been unable, and the real proof of their success is in the [croissant bread] pudding. Again, they will most likely sell out of your favorite pastries, so get up early or check online often to get what you want. Their coffee is great too!Personal favorite: Cherry Pistachio Croissant—though I haven’t had anything I didn’t like.

Absolutely delicious! A thousand light, buttery, crisp layers of pure heaven! We bought a variety of items to try and they were all fantastic. We tasted the craftsmanship, love, passion and care that went into each item; and bonus...a light smoke from the wood fire ovens!

Most of the time their pastries are some of the best in town. However, last December two weeks in a row I bought pastries (apple turnover was one) and they were clearly a day old and not at all enjoyable. If they want to get rid of old pastries they should 1) discount the price, and 2) give the customer the choice of buying them or not.

Very good pastries and fun space (albeit small). There's quite a bit of inconsistency with their baked goods so not all breads/pastries will turn out the same. While for some this is an adventure, I've been left with too many gummy loaves or loaves with wildly uneven crumb/slits. The pastries tend to be much more consistent than the loaves, however! The bakery is very popular and I assume they're under constant growing pains from their huge fanbase. Your favorite pastries may sell out fast so get your order in early!

Best bakery in Richmond! UPDATED: 4/5 stars because it is inaccessible to people who don’t have phones and can’t pay online. Occasionally a badass employee will accept exact change if you wait outside long enough

The best bakery in the world! Organic and locally ground wheat, the highest quality ingredients. Friendly service. The best!!
