Our dinner was perfect & the service was impeccable! Most of us got the specials, which were creative and well executed, but our daughter got the hanger steak and said it was the best she has ever had. We had a hard time deciding which dessert so we each got something and shared. The sticky pudding was my favorite of all! The ambiance was beautiful & comfortable. We highly recommend Shagbark!

Four of us visited on a Saturday night. After cocktails, our over attentive waitress took our entree orders and asked if “we would like soup or house salad”. We ordered the 3 salads and a cup of soup. The food was good and we had enjoyed our evening, but when the bill arrived we were charged $44 for the salads and soup. We were surprised and irritated since the waitress had led us to believe soup or salad was included. Left a very bad taste in our mouth; will think twice before returning.

Had a wonderful evening with wonderful new friends and colleagues. The staff here is great and effortlessly moves in and out, serving like dancers. A beautifully run restaurant is really fun to observe. The food was splendid. I had the short rib with egg noodles and veggies. Delicious and incredibly tender. Excited about moving to the area....Shagbark will be a favorite....we'll be back.

We were a table for 4 from Pennsylvania on a girls weekend away and wanted a great restaurant for our Saturday evening out. We were all impressed by the ambience with the decor and were not disappointed to be sat in the quiet part of the restaurant. From the time we sat down, it all seemed a little confusing as to the drink menu and specials as the hostess commented that they are a standout for their cocktails. Only 5 were listed so that was a surprise yet 2 chose a cocktail; the other 2 a glass of wine. Our server's speech impediment was not judged but we found ourselves with frustration in not being comfortable with asking questions, the delay in speaking; thankfully she was wearing a mask but in a fine dining setting this was a little unnerving. We are all compassionate ladies but it affected our experience as the questions we asked, her responses were awkward and for some, it did not seem as if she or the kitchen wanted to consider our suggestion/preferences. Two of us were looking for a vegetable /side dish only option and had asked if we could focus on the accompanients to the other dishes. We were told we could have what was served with the chicken dish but without the chicken. Fine.....but only to be billed the full amount, with no chicken. Overall, everything was okay but an expectation with other reviews would have made us to believe that it would have been better than okay. We travel a fair amount, choose restaurants accordingly for pulling the best from an area, but unfortunately, Shagbark is not one that can get a high regard or expected return from our group. The creme brulee was the most outstanding part of the meal. When we asked about dessert, our server said that most would rather skip the entree and just get dessert. Although it may not be how she meant it but in the end, she was right.

Anja's service was extraordinary. I am on a very strict low potassium diet and both my wife and I are pescatarians. The reservation form asks for any dietary restrictions and we included our needs there. I've had other restaurants make an effort to accommodate our dietary needs, but nothing can approach Anja's efforts. She worked with the kitchen staff to not only avoid the main high potassium ingredients, but went so far as to avoid sauces that had, for example, dairy products in them. I must add that all this was done on a very busy Saturday night and her other service were excellent, as well. Anja qualified for five stars in our book. The previous level of service was good, but did not compare to Anja's. In addition, the food here is both excellent quality, extremely well prepared by the kitchen staff and a good value. We would have returned one of the other two nights we were in town, but unfortunately Shagbark is closed on Sundays and Mondays We have dined here before and plan to return.

Excellent service and lovely atmosphere and decor. Loved the selection of bread plate. We ordered a couple of dishes and shared with the table. The duck breast was amazing and perfectly cooked. We loved the baked oysters. The hanger steak was decent. Loved their selection of desserts and we decided to get the toffee pudding cake.Would come back again and again

Lovely evening with my new elixir whiskey sour. Staff very accommodating shifting the mushroom toast and fried green tomato to be vegetarian. Their cocktail sauce is out of this world, made with a tomato jam rather than a Heinz /Hunts ketchup. We were spreading it on crackers. Oysters were fresh and perfectly shucked. Capped off the evening with the sticky toffee pudding delightful.

First impression - the place is rustic meets modern. I like the vibe. Service was good, the waiter appropriately filled water & asked for drink refills in a timely manner. Food was delivered promptly - but this was also a reduced capacity seating due to COVID. Food - for the price, the food was mediocre. That’s the main drawback. The appetizers was better than the entrees & almost the same size as the entrees as well lol. The sweet potato ravioli was solid; however the fried green tomatoes were served with grits that were far too acidic. Entrees - the short ribs was fine, little tough to chew and VERY small portion for 36$. The side of kale was 2x the size of the beef portion. We thought it was comical. Ate the beef in 2 bites. Wife got the Cod, fish was good but the risotto was undercooked. Seeing that it was not a busy night, the food should’ve been better prepared for the price. However, it is a fairly pricey restaurant to get mediocre food. The rest of the place passes inspection but the food leaves a little to be desired.

The food was great, but our entire experience was tainted by Morgen's horrible attitude and awful service quality. Her interactions with others seemed okay, but she was very dismissive and unattentive to us the entire time. She was also very controlling and said that we were not allowed to look at the dessert menu until we were completely done with our entrees. Even though we were there to celebrate a special occasion, she did not make it special for us at all. She gave the table next to us free food "just because" but she didn't even smile when she speaks to us. We tipped her over 20% because she still needs to make a living, but having her as a server that night made us wish that we had just gone to the local thai place instead of Shagbark.

My husband and I dined at Shagbark as part of his 75th birthday celebration. The service is excellent - from the wait staff to supporting staff - all were pleasant, and made good menu and adult beverage suggestions. The fried oysters and friend green tomatoes were stellar appetizers! My husbands short ribs were good, but the homemade noodles were cold. If this happens to you, be sure to request a quick heat-up to really enjoy the dish. I enjoyed the Parmesan crusted flounder - it was hot, no bones, the vegetables and tomato coulis created an interesting and delicious pairing. My only suggestion is a more diverse list of wines by the glass. In general, restaurants in Richmond seem to offer local wines, which I certainly respect. For those of us who prefer more available options, more familiar names (at least one) would be appreciated. Thank you.
