Very very nice place. Local spot. It is a rose in a bush of thorns. The area around the restaurant has fallen on hard times. As you drive to the restaurant you see the falling businesses in the area. Then you come upon the Abuelita’s and it is well represented. Clean out side, parking lot well lite and maintained. No one hanging around outside. Once you go inside the restaurant, the staff is quick to greet you and tell how to ordering works. My wife and I had a fantastic meal. The food is hot hot and tasty. The staff are constantly on the floor mopping, sweeping and quick to pick up the dishes. I got the small plate and almost could not finish it. We look forward to going back. Just make sure you go before the sun goes down. More then worth the trip.Best Mexican food I had thus far in Richmond.
Awesome authentic Mexican food in a clean and cute atmosphere with great service. We sampled a variety of the stews, which they rotate, and decided on the chicken tinga and the pork and cactus. Both were delicious and we ordered the plate with rice and beans, which came with tortillas to build your own tacos. We will definitely be back!
I really like this place. So welcoming, lovely food, staff is always happy to explain the dishes or provide a sample. Great value for the portion size, dining room is so clean! Seems like they run a tight ship, and the tile work is pretty too.
I was not impressed at all. The amount of food you get for the price is sad. You walk up to a glass they plop your food on a plate and you seat yourself. The food was good at best but not all that. Rice was undercooked and the black beans had no flavor. Four dollars for a beer is not what I will pay again. There is no service other than the food being plopped on your plate and almost mixed together. If you need anything you get it yourself. The worst was my wife was disappointed also.They will have to step up their game before I'll go back.
The food, the atmosphere and the customer service are all superb. I couldn't wait to try the birria tacos ? love this place.
Amazing experience! The employees were so nice and helpful. We tried four different stews and they were each delicious. They have a salsa and topping bar that did not disappoint either. We will be going back very soon.
Abuelitas is a fantastic restaurant with a rotating menu of Mexican stews that are served with rice and beans of your choice and a tortilla. The beans are delicious and cooked perfectly. While I've only tried 2 stews they had an exquisite depth of flavour and variety of spices and meat to offer.
I was born and raised in the Philippines and this place tastes more like home than any other restaurant in all of Richmond. The pork+potato and the cactus stews are amazing. The customer service is also amazing. Don't put off coming here.
Amazing food! If you're reluctant, dont worry! You can sample anything before you commit! I make sure I go in at least once a week. The carne Mexicana, quesabirria tacos and pollo en crema chorizo are the best IMO
This was a truly unique and delicious experience. Abuelita's is not like the Mexican restaurant that most Americans are accustomed to. It took me a sec to get oriented. Instead of tacos and burritos, you will get a plate of rice, beans, and one or more amazing meat or veggie stews, plus tortillas. Then there is a huge selection of self-serve salsas and toppings to customize your plate. I got steak and pork and they were super-flavorful, very complex spicing, and for me, just the right amount of heat - which varies between the choices, so there's something for everyone. I was reminded of Indian food, only the spicing is Mexican. Also, served very hot, which I appreciate.I will return to Abuelita's again and again!
