This establishment is known for being the inventor of the waffle cone and having the world’s first cone machine. If you visit today, make sure to grab some BBQ and eat it in your car at the old fashioned drive thru.
Limited ice cream flavors. They hand make all the waffle cones on site. Unfortunately they did not have the keepsake bottle to bring the waffle cones home with us. They have the oldest waffle cone maker.
It lived up to all the hype. Best ice cream waffle cone and ice cream around. This is a must setup place for any traveler. Mr. Doumar would be proud of the legacy that we has left for the world to enjoy
More like 3.5, round up because is the food amazing on its own? No. Is it supposed to be? Not reallyThis place is a historical icon, being the birthplace of the world's first ice cream cone machine that you can see right on the outside and is a time machine both in the way they operate and the food. It's a cool visit to this really retro time where everything was super cheap, and you can drive up to the parking lot and just have someone come up to your car and take your order. Each thing here is a few dollars which is amazing. Things come wrapped in clear plastic wrap sometimes (which I find odd), but for a few bucks - whatever! The burger is actually surprisingly good for something that costs just a few bucks. The fries tend to be kind of soggy and not particularly crunchy; they're also short. Hot dogs are served in burger buns.Ice cream is just okay. But again, you go to appreciate the time period of food it represents and have a cheap bite to eat. Know what you're signing up for! And you'll have a good time.
It was my son's birthday and we wanted to try Doumar's. It was worth the drive! Delicious drive in food and they make their own ice cream. I had a grilled ham and cheese with french fries. My son had a hamburger and fries. He had a chocolate milkshake ( one of the best ever) and I had a root beer float and a small hot fudge sundae. It's clean, friendly and great food for not a lot of money.
We used the drive-in and had the pork roll, both hamburgers (one with mayo, lettuce, tomato; the other with mustard, onion, relish), BBQ sandwiches, fries, a strawberry shake, double chocolate ice cream in one of their famous cones, and a Ringo. Everything was as hot or cold as it should be, and everything was as wonderful tasting as we'd hoped. Service was great! One waitress for all the cars, and she handled everybody quickly, efficiently, and accurately. What a pleasure to deal with such a pro - she got a 20% tip. If we ever go back to Norfolk, we won't hesitate to go back to Doumar's.
great food great service and just an over All great lunch
My last review was in 2017 and I said they needed to pick up the quality/consistency. We supported them (takeout) thru covid and returned to inside dining this year. Quality and consistency have dropped. The bun falls apart, the bbq is just fair and I think they are counting the french fries. I would pay more if they could bring the quality back. I ate here twice a week for years...I miss the good food/times.
Loved this place. Amazing service by lovely staff. Amazing food. We had the cheeseburger and pulled pork sandwich. With a vanilla milkshake and a lime milkshake. And then had a butter pecan and orange sherbet cone. Loved the in car service with the tray on the side of your car. Fantastic American experience. Highly recommended and would go back again in a heartbeat.
The food was good and had an enjoyable experience ?
