My husband was craving BBQ and he googled this place and we thought the reviews were good and the prices affordable. For our two meals we paid $40. They have a sign saying they upgraded their prices but I was surprised by our total. I figured I was overcharged but my receipt wasn’t itemized and only had the total(something I dislike). We were optimistic thinking the food would be worth it. WRONG! I got a sliced pork sandwich North Carolina style BBQ. What I got was two thick slices of a roast that tasted like it came from the oven, chewy and not smoked. I included a picture of it. The sides are in the tiniest 4 ounce cups that are usually used for salad dressing. My husband’s pork meal was full of gristle. Needless to say this is a one and done trip for us. The cashier was lovely but the food was disappointing.

Hadn't visited this Newport News fixture in the 35 years since I moved from the neighborhood. But I'm back, so was happy to see it's still open, tho no longer owned by the Parker family. The chopped pork is tasty, the hushpuppies crispy outside & tender inside, and the meringue pies made in the restaurant in 3 varieties. Old fashioned but satisfying. The "decor" is, um, 1940's hole-in-the-wall, but I'm good with it.
Absolutely the best homemade food. Hands down the best variety. Vegetables and desserts galore! Best BBQ this side of North Carolina! OH YEAH! Service is impeccable!
It gets worst each time,I patronize this place a month ago phone in for two small BBQ sandwiches,1 sliced,1 chopped,had a few rounds to get to before headed home,by the time I got home,business was closed no one to complain to,because only 1 order was right,went inside on the 26th of May,around 5:00 pm,placed a order for a small. sliced BBQ,worst tasting sandwich,tougher than boot leather sole,just as thick ans sliced with the grain,most everyone who sliced a BBQ pork sandwich know you cut against the grain,so when you bite into the meat,it should fall off and melt in your mouth,I had to pull the meat into small straps just to chew the meat several times over,I can say I won't be wasting my time or money at this place,I thought most BBQ had a smoky or vinegar taste,which neither was present?????????
Nice people. Price was inexpensive! Reminds me of home. Country atmosphere and love the decor. Booths need to be recovered but the food was good
Ordered 2 combos. One bbq chicken and bbq ribs combo with 3 sides, which are baked beans, fried okra and potato salad. Didn't even get the chicken, only ribs and pulled pork and no fried okra.The second one got pulled pork (saucy) and ribs combo with 3 sides which were potato salad, corn pudding and fried okra. Got the sides, the ribs but no pulled pork.Do not go here. It was my first time here and they messed this up.
We got a medley of meats and sides. The pork & chicken BBQ was plentiful, tasty, and enjoyed by us all. The seafood was also good. The slaw, baked beans, were savory. We also got mac & chz, (but I didn't try any). Those that did seemed to enjoy it. We even had banana pudding for desert. I will return.
Rocky Mount BBQ has been a go-to restaurant for decades! Always expect great service, low prices, and good food. Great hushpuppies and BBQ! North Carolina style. Check out the deviled eggs (made to order) and lots of country style veggies. YUM!!!
I have eaten Rocky Mount BBQ from the time I was little, it has always been good homemade southern food! Today I ordered the fried fish sandwich and wow it is so tasty! Its very moist, cooked to a nice golden color, and the flavor of the fish is awesome especially since it’s flounder! I had an order of the crinkle cut fries and they are cooked perfectly as well, not too soft and not to crispy, JUST RIGHT! I recommend all the food, especially the chopped bbq because I love vinegar, but when I want something different from a bbq place the fish sandwich is my go to!
