Food was not fresh you can tell by the hard dry texture of the meat, the dark breading, and how soggy the pork chops were that the food had been refrigerated and reheated next to no seasoning or flavor in the greens, yams were pretty good so I guess that’s where the one star would come from would not recommend martins is not what it use to be smh
6/8/2022!! No Good. Fat all over the Oxtails. I can’t make this up. Look at the pics. It tastes worse than it looks.
The staff was friendly. The food was ok but overpriced for the servings. My chicken was old, dark black and tasted burnt. I'm thinking because it was the end of the day (near closing) and they refried pieces of chicken that were sitting out all day. I asked for 3 different menu items but they were all sold out for the day. So I settled for the chicken. My advice, go at least 2-3 hours before closing. We arrived about an hour before closing and it was slim pickings.
Some of the best service at a soul food restaurant in Newport News. The first thing I saw the very first time I walked into Martin's soul food was Marcus's smiling face. He is pleasant, professional and friendly. Yall head on over to MARTIN'S SOUL FOOD and get some delicious comfort food. It is sooooo worth it.
We had the pleasure of stumbling over this wonderful establishment today. We were traveling back to MD & our intentions were to have a late breakfast at IHOP but the wait was too long so we decided to try Martin's Soul Food. The restaurant was clean, the food was excellent & Dominique was courteous and welcoming. The wings, whiting, jerk chicken, chicken livers, cabbage, yams, mac & cheese and collards were all delicious. You just have to be patient because the food is cooked to order. Trust me, you won't be dissatisfied.
Very disappointing food experience. The food quality was very low. The best part was the outstanding customer service. The mixed greens were extremely salty and could have benefited from simple, fresh ingredients like onions and red bell peppers. The rice was bland. The rice portion to protein was significantly imbalanced. There were many hard rice grains in my serving. The meatloaf, although shaped like a meatloaf, was very dry and tasted more like a square hamburger. The cornbread was ok.The food quality is not reminiscent of "soul food" and I'm embarrassed by the absence of quality soul food that Martins Soul Food Restaurant is selling at this location.
It was not nearby my residence, however, extremely worth the trip!!! For sometime, good things had been said to me about this restaurant. I'm a mighty happy witness for myself now! The menu had several good entree, sandwich, and side dish choices, at nice prices. Yes, all of the food was exceptionally delicious plus the overall environment was better than sufficient. The place was quite clean, bright, and full of brilliantly, cheerful, hospitality. Our meals were very well portioned and not over seasoned. My colleague and I look forward to going back often with plenty of other folks.
First time I went the food was awesome. I had chicken livers, rice w/gravy and cabbage. Went back the second time and ordered smothered pork chops rice w/gravy and cabbage..the pork chops had so much breading on it, it was like a piece of bread was attached..the gravy was so thick with absolutely no taste..just tasted like colored flour with..so disappointing...I have told so many how good the food was after my first visit..but, the second visit did not impress me AT ALL!!!!!!
Went there twice. My rice was over cooked. The cabbage was little a tiny scoop. The cat fish was ok. My hubby plate was an extremely small portion. Previously had whiting and it was two small portions. Over priced for over cooked and small portion food. ??
We (my cousin Kristle and I) like eating from Restaurants that have Great Food with Great Customer Service Skills. Since the Pandemic we always order pickup and delivery especially with Door Dash and Postmates. But today we ordered through UBER EATS from MARTIN'S SOUL FOOD RESTAURANT at the NEWPORT NEWS, VIRGINIA location. Our Food was not only HOT, TASTY and GREAT, but first she called to asked a lot of questions and MARCUS was not only PATIENT, but VERY UNDERSTANDING and HELPFUL with GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS. He end up helping us with those answers to make our ordering decisions a DELIGHTFUL EXPERIENCE. He was on point and right. Everything that he said was CORRECT about the FOOD and PORTION SIZES. We end up ordering the Two LUNCH SPECIALS:1) CHICKEN WINGS with MAC & CHEESE , YAMS ROLL and another side of MIXED GREENS for me.2) WHITING FISH with CABBAGE , MAC & CHEESE, ROLL and side DESERT (STRAWBERRY CAKE), for my cousin Kristle.BOTH MEALS were DELICIOUS and the CAKE was FRESH, MOIST and VERY TASTY. BOTH MEALS were FULFILLING and VERY SATISFYING. We will not only recommend eating at MARTIN'S SOUL FOOD RESTAURANT in the NEWPORT NEWS location, but make sure you see MARCUS because HE KNOWS HIS FOOD and has a GREAT PERSONALITY with POSITIVE ENERGY. THANKS MARTIN'S SOUL FOOD RESTAURANT, MARCUS and UBER EATS.( THE COUSIN'S: GARY & KRISTLE).
