Great Food Fantastic service very reasonable price, we will be back!
On our 1st "Official Date" my wife and I went to Danny's Deli in January 1979. 43 years, 3 children, and 3 grandchildren later, Danny's is still our go to place for a great lunch! My wife always gets the Danny's Regular Sub (I'll take a bite out of hers when she's not looking!), and I always get the Hot Ham & Cheese Sub. Their deli meat is above board - not like the processed ham you find in most subs. So take your best girl or guy and make Danny's your place to eat!
Before y'all were born, I reckon, Danny was alive and kickin', and I figure he opened this restaurant just so he could have edible food in a town that didn't feature much but a coalyard at one end (next to the boatyard almost) and Yoder's Mennonite Dairy at the other (next to the Warwick County Court House almost). In between killin' machinery and the cows there were (and still are) several thousand nail salons, thereabouts. But it seems that man, especially, can't live on nail polish alone. Or even pizza. But Danny's was a special place I guess as soon as Danny built it, and even though I lived far away in Hampton in the late 1960's--back when Hampton was Crabtown, U.S.A., and was annually manufacturing billions of tons of fertilizer from I think the surplus discarded crabshells and rotten leather, giving ALL of Hampton a memorable aroma about twenty-four hours a day--I would travel many miles to eat Danny's free deli pickles. If I was still hungry, I would order (and later pay for) a real Yankee deli sandwich. Except for Danny's Deli Restaurant, these were in pretty short supply between NYC and Miami Beach in them days (and still are) .Although sadly Danny has passed away, Debbie and Bill Vaccarelli (no relation to Danny), an enthusiastic young married couple, purchased Danny's Deli Restaurant in 1990, and continue the Yankee tradition--today their daughter even bakes the beautiful and dangerously delicious cheesecakes which I am not allowed to eat!Even though the deli display case which failed so many years ago--I think while Danny was still with us--can today only display the children's toys and other memorabilia which gradually accumulated in it over the years, you can appreciate the sentimental preservation of another time entirely. Here today you are still able to select among a variety of rye breads for your very generous deli sandwiches; here you have a wide variety of very generous sandwiches; here you may obtain iced tea sweetened OR unsweetened! No designer beers, kids, but a variety of soft drinks!I had planned to photograph the menu for you, but Kim Vaccarelli, the Pastry Chef, informed me that Changes to the Menu are In the Works, so I took pictures of other things as I gobbled down my sandwich. I suppose Prices may be one of the changes, as they are certainly on the low side: but all of the food is so good, and has been so good for the past half century, I'll be as excited as everyone else to ring in the changes!
This was the first restaurant I ate at when I moved to Newport News. They make great sandwiches. The staff is always kind. I got a Turkey Reuben to go. My picture isn't particularly appealing but my sandwich was nevertheless delicious. It was wrapped with care in wax paper: the rye was toasted, the turkey was hot, and the dressing wasn't slathered on. Alas, the french fries didn't travel all that well. It isn't pictured, but there was a really good pickle that I believe was made there.
The Ruben was awesome!! Also had the Key Lime Cheesecake it was out of this world!!!
Have loved Danny's for most of my 60 plus years...it seems.Reliably great hot and cold sandwiches...homemade salads ...stuff like corned beef .Famous also for the Kosher Pickles that accompany each sandwich. In fact...You get a little bowl of sliced pickles after you sit down...yum !They have early closing hours and are closed on Sundays...be sure and check them before going by.
A nostalgic visit to this local landmark after more than 35 years! It hasn't changed at all and my sandwich ( the "Ricky": corned beef, pastrami &swiss) was great.
