How can people call this bbq? Absolutely no smoke flavor. Everything tastes like it was made in the oven. I live a few blocks away and have never seen or smelled smoke. Moved to VA three years ago from Texas and still haven't found any bbq better than just okay. I get this is regional but please abandon the bland and embrace some flavor.
I'll give it another shot but I wasn't too impressed the first time around. My daughter and son in law said it was great the first time they had it so I'll give it another try when I'm back in town. I didn't know you had to ask for sauce so I got dry pulled pork.
Hands down... Best BBQ in VA. Locals favorite for half a Century. To some it's a hidden gem and to others it's a well known fact - there's no BBQ like WILKES BBQ. I get mine ATW All the Way (w slaw and hot sauce), always with a side potato salad, which my husband and I agree is our favorite - the recipe is perfect! Sometimes we fancy Northern Beans and other times the bbq beans do the job. Heck, sometimes we get a small side of each. THE COLLARDS ARE TO DIE FOR, only available friesh in season. Home made slices or while pies available -- SWEET POTATO PIE like grandmas. This place is ? ? ? If you haven't tried, you're missing out!
They are a Local BBQ , Been in Business over 50 Years, I have Eaten their BBQ Almost that long,I recently ordered BBQ, POTATO SALAD, BAKED BEANS, GREEN BEANS, COLESLAW, for , 70 th Birthday Party, They went above & beyond to Help me out, All my Quests Raved about All the Food. Some of the best Carolina style BBQ I've ever had. The potatoes salad reminds me of my mom's and grandma's . Navy beans and baked beans are delicious. Sometimes there's a waiting list for the collards. I've tried almost everything on their menu and I only have one complaint and that is they are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Omg so good.
This is NOT BAR B Q on an charcoal or wood smoke ls grill. The ribs are oven baked with plain sauce. The baked beans are Van Camps Pork and Beans with added “stuff”. The Chipped Bar B Q is terrible no taste. It should be called Wilkes Kitchen MO GRILL IN SIGHT??♂️
My experience with the barbecue was it should’ve been cooked a little bit longer. The great Northern beans were flavorless and cooked way too long that I was actually drinking the beans as opposed to chewing the beans. The poor pork has way too much vinegar. I’m from Chicago, although I have no problem with vinegar but vinegar base is taken to an extreme at this place. I’ve had there greens, the sweet potatoes, and there macaroni and cheese. They pass for flavor, however, but since people have been eating what they serve for years that’s all they know. They should consider upgrading their seasonings a little bit, cooking their barbecue little bit longer, and losing some of the vinegar or at least offer alternatives.
