Was in Fredericksburg for a soccer game and had to stop in. I grew up on Allman’s BBQ (Richmond location)As soon as I stepped out of my car the smell of the BBQ had my mind racing with memories. We order BBQ, original sauce, mac&cheese, coleslaw and onion rings to go. Everything was delicious!!
Allman’s dates back to 1954 and the setting inside reminded me of a southern diner in an old episode of Quantum Leap. I ordered a deep fried hamburger which sounded interesting with a side of Mac and cheese and fries. Mac and cheese is the creamier type,so if you prefer the crunchier, baked version keep that in mind. The burger reminded me of the Steak and Shake type but the real star was the house sauce. Made with a very vinegary base, I wish I had bought some to take home. Dining room was clean but small and under current unmasked conditions, it could be uncomfortable if that is a concern for you. Would return.
We have always been curious about Allman's but really haven't had time to stop. I saw a "Google suggestion" saying it is similar to Rodney Scott's BBQ, in Charleston S.C. so we decided okay...we'll give it a shot. Bless their hearts. We placed our order for PULLED PORK, the very nice young man brought us some BBQ sauce. My husband said it tasted like McDonald's sweet and sour sauce! We asked if they have any other BBQ sauce. He brought us brown sugar rib sauce, it tasted like ketchup and brown sugar. We decided to take our order to go so we could use our own BBQ sauce at home. We paid, and tipped the very nice man. I tasted the plain PULLED PORK and it is good on it own. I use a Memphis sauce, my husband actually has some sauce by Rodney Scott, so he used it. I really liked the potatoe salad but the Cole slaw is so bland we both tossed it in the trash. I tasted the collard greens, and I don't know what the heck the tomato looking things are in it, but the texture is not pleasant! I tossed it out too. My husband said the Jiffy cornbread is familiar. And the beans were okay. Thank you for the potato salad!
So down to earth. So simple and easy. Oh, by the way, the food is amazing. And I enjoyed a half sweetened half unsweetened homemade iced tea - perfect! Thank you
Great! The store was very clean (which is a welcome surprise for a small restaurant like this!) The staff was super friendly and sweet! I wish I caught their names. Food was also amazing! I had the burger and loved it. I also got the pulled pork to go and am super excited to eat it later!
I had a great minced pork sandwich. The house vinegar based sauce combined perfectly with the sandwich. I had two sides- bbq beans and cole slaw. Both very good.
Although the food was good, the servings can be misleading. The qt size bowl was only half full. When I called the lady said the sell it by weight. I have no idea how to weight a qt, so I just went with it
Used to be my to go to BBQ place, cuz of flavor and price. Tonight will be my last night getting food there. Y'all highly disappointed me. Changed the menu and The recipes, there's a saying don't fix something that ain't broken.
Great BBQ. It beats anything churned out by the corporate Q chains. Its local and true to the original I remember from 50 years ago. Even the sauce is so close to original it brought back great memories.
Name should be charged to- We A Are Out Of That. No Ribs, or stew and the cherry on top of the Sunday, No Sweet Tea. The food I did have a chance to taste was just okay.
