We have wanted to try Thompson Italian for the longest time. Food was tasty. But disappointing is the abrupt service provided by a particular server behind the bar not listening to her customers and was so tuned out that she cleared our left-overs without packing my husband's meal even after we said we would like to take it home. After we asked her what happened to my husband's meal. She simply said she was mistaken and she did not offer to make it up, but said "they were going to have to do it all over from scratch" as if it's a burden for her. Is that good customer service? You should really think about the people you want to put in the "front lines" to make that first impression for your restaurant. This is why we gave it 2 stars. We would have given 5 stars, but she made our decision to give it 2 starts. If you are trying to be the next level restaurant, customer service and professionalism are key along with the excellent food.I get it that people like to try new things but a good restaurant is not only about food but also the customer service. I have never given a low rating, but truly it was a very poor dining experience. Thank you to your bar master.

We came here for dinner with 4 adults and my two kids and we could not have asked for a better experience. The food and drinks are amazing and the kids menu came with fries which both my kids love. The wait staff really understood what it means to be out with kids and also at the same time provided an adult atmosphere. We have lived in NOVA for 20 years and we have not had this type of awesome experience at a restaurant ever (including pre kid life). Thompson's was so great!

The food was absolutely delicious. The menu was small, often signaling higher quality. The portions were a good size. The bass was absolutely perfectly cooked and in a delicious white wine cream sauce with ramps. The mango sorbet was fantastic. This is a good restaurant for a special occasion but a bit pricey for a casual visit.

We've driven by Thompson so many times and finally decided we needed to try it! Walked in on a Friday night for dinner and was able to find a couple seats at the bar. The service was a bit off - took awhile to have orders taken, appetizer/salad/bread came before we were given napkins/utensils. We were asked what beverages we wanted, but then order wasn't taken until well after initial food was served. The pastas were quite good - cooked to the perfect texture and sauces tasty. Love that the Bolognese was more tomato-based and meaty flavored. The rabbit gnocchi was good in all the right ways, just could have used more salt. All in all a good meal and would definitely be back for Italian in a pinch.Note - there is free parking in the adjacent Kaiser Permanente garage, just a few minutes walk from the restaurant.

I disagree with writer who called this restaurant over rated, and I agree with writer who said it was the best restaurant meal in a long time. It was that for us, too. Everything from the House cocktails to dessert was excellent. It is a little loud when crowded but service was great. Took several weeks to get a res but it was worth the wait! Best parts for me? The artichoke appetizer (however it was cooked it was excellent) the olive oil cake for dessert! Prices are great too, by the way!

Delicious!! For apps we got the arancini and the brussel sprouts. They were both awesome! I got the gnocchi for my main course and my friend got the pasta special which he enjoyed as well. The gnocchi were so so good!! We got the lemon cheesecake for dessert and it was very tasty. Excellent service as well.

All the dishes we had were good…but did not wow us. It’s a place I would go again if I’m in the neighborhood, but not something I would go out of my way for. Also, what’s with their HVAC system? It did not keep a constant temperature in the restaurant during our visit. It would blow hot air until we were sweating, then it would switch to cold breeze until we need to put the jacket back on.

Thompsons Italian is my favorite restaurant right now. Every dish evokes joyful pleasure from the appetizers to desserts (i believe one of the owners is the pastry chef). Wishfully thinking, i called at the last minute to try and snag a reservation for my sister’s birthday. A place was found! The cuisine at TI is superb. What’s also superb is the service, from the reservations manager to the wait staff. Consistently, every time. If this feels over-the-top, it’s not. My husband Ed and I give TI our highest recommendation. And thanks. Sara and Edwin Davis

We'd heard good things about Thompson Italian from friends, so we were glad to get a chance to dine there one night when our kids all had plans. We weren't very hungry, so we split a burrata appetizer which had citrus and endive, which helps cut the richness of the burrata. We felt that it's a great appetizer to share.Main courses were a simple pork tortellini, which was in a roast pork sauce that was so good it demanded every drop be soaked up with bread. The other dish was squid ink pasta with scallops, lemon, and bread crumbs, in a mussel brodo. Also excellent.Wine list is small but with good variety, and reasonably priced with some available by the glass. I do wish they had a couple of house wines, but that's a nit.Only complaint is that it can get very loud. There was a larger party in the front near the bar, and I pity the folks that had to sit near that table. It may just have been exceptionally loud the night we went, but my guess is that some sort of sound deadening wouldn't hurt the place.

I have not provided a poor review for ANY restaurant but was pretty disappointed when ordering carry out for Thompson Italiano. The food was good but it cost $80 for 2 meals and a salad and the servings for the pasta were less than half of the box and my husband’s Rigatoni was $22 and my Mushroom Tortellini was $17. We have never ate there at the Falls Church location but we do have a gift card that we’ve had for a while and haven’t used yet. After ordering carry out last night (Sat Jan 15th) when we were really hungry, excited to have Thompson Italiano for the first time but we’re highly disappointed based on the portion size and given the cost, we’re unsure we’ll be giving another shot.
