Tons of options to pick from. Can’t go wrong.
Fast work from the kitchen. The three different salsa (free) were all so good, and were honestly the best thing from the place. Their menu seems long but there’s no creativity in the tacos and it’s honestly hard to find one that we were interested in. The beef in the Asado taco was so hard to chew and I was so disappointed. The “star-nitas” was way sweeter than I thought it was going to be and didn’t taste great. The guacamole was also very boring. Not sure we would come here again for anything but the chips and salsa.
Atmosphere - 5/5Service - 5/5Value - 5/5Food - 3/5As the name implies, they’re going for the Austin TX taco style, and it’s probably as close as you can get to that in Cville, but it’s just not Austin. They’re doing everything else right and it’s a nice outdoor hangout spot for a reasonable price, worth a stop
How does being from Texas make you an expert on tacos? "Hey! Look at me! I'm from a county that has the same name as the Restaurant! That means I have an extra magic taco tongue and my opinion is made of gold and persuasion!" Sorry, I'm reacting to a one star review I just read. I think that may be a faux pas in review writing culture. Anyhow, I'm from Kentucky, so I KNOW my opinion is the only one that matters. I love Brazos. It's not the décor, or the outdoor seating, or the intensely intimidating and fashion forward staff. It's the... it is umm, yeah. You see it's hard to explain. Try this- you know how for years and years Americans were told that our taste buds were only capable of detecting sour, bitter, sweet and salty? But you knew- you just knew- those weren't the only ones because not everything you ate was gross? Then one day some awful know-it-all friend of yours says, "I just love kimchi, it has sooo much umami." and you just had to go and ask, "what's umami," and because they're smug they never let you forget it 20 years later? It's like that. It's umami. There is this hard-to-define quality to their creations. The Star-nitas for example. It has honey-salsa and watermelon pickles on it. I don't know what watermelon pickles are, but I know that with the pork and avocado there is an alchemical magic that is inexplicable. They have so many options that give me the same craving. I imagine it's like the tobacco stock infusion that the chef of the French Laundry used to make to keep the line cooks from taking smoke breaks back in "the day." I realize this is an unhelpful review, but I used to hate this place, and yet now I eat there more often than any other place in town- monthly at any rate. To be fair, I mostly hated it because I don't like going to restaurants where cool people congregate (by "cool people" I mean anyone out-of-doors in anything other than sweats- I am not cool), but that's what carry-out is for. Sure, they've screwed up my order, like almost half the time, but half the time they screw it up I discover something that I love and would never have ordered. I crave those Star-nitas all the time, but I would NEVER have ordered a honey watermelon taco. This place is amazing but addictive is the only summation I can conjure. There just isn't any expressible, quantifiable or qualifiable reason why I love it. They often mess up your order and the staff and clientele make you feel like you farted on on your first day at a new school when the teacher asks you to introduce yourself. Why is this the best taco place in Charlottesville? I don't know, but it is, and you can rest assured I'm right.
I'm a Texan from Austin and these tacos were on point! I only got a couple of the vegetarian tacos, so can't say anything on their meat, but I definitely felt like I would find this shop back home. Flour tortillas were great. Very impressed! Also got a local pilsner beer that was delicious ?
This place serves the best tacos I've eaten outside Mexico. The sweet potato version was especially yummy. I really liked their agua fresca too. We sampled several tacos, all stellar: perfect ratio of filling to shell, the corn and flour tortillas were fresh and delicious in their own right, and the patio is very nice. Just go there!
Love these tacos! Outdoor seating area is great too.
This place is not authentic Mexican, which I should have known by the Texas sign on the door. Good was okay at best, margaritas were from a mix, also not authentic drinks and were terrible. But hey, if you like that kind of food then this is the place. Mediocre TexMex. Not sure why they get such good reviews. Queso is beer cheese, not real queso.
Being from Texas and living there for 30 years, this is not Texas or Texas Street Tacos as described. Drinks are very strong, but have little flavor. Covid protocols are super overboard. Ordering via your phone and paying via your phone is the only thing accepted....have fun with that. The ordering menu is difficult on an android. Then you MUST tip to pay...tip for what exactly, me ordering my own food, me getting my own food or me paying for my own food? How about you tip me.
I waited over an hour for my order and then cancelled in disgust when the cashier told me it would be yet another half hour. They charged my credit card the next day. I called them about this and they gave me a partial refund, but they kept the tip I had given when I placed my original order.I Facebook messaged them and they never responded.I called again 10 days ago and they admitted that I should have gotten a full refund and even sent me a receipt for a full refund. What they would not do is actually refund me the rest of my money.Rather than spend more time haggling with this restaurant, I’m just going to let them keep the tip for the tacos they never even started and leave this review as a warning to others.
