Overall decent experience. However, for the price range, there are better choices around the NRV.
Seated promptly at time of our reservation. Our waitress very attentive but not intrusive. We started with wonderful tuna appetizer. Our entrees - one lamb chops the other a seafood pasta were cooked to perfection. We shared the Italian lemon cake and ate every last morsel!
We had high expectations, but were disappointed with the flavor and quality or ingredients. The lamb was way too salty (and I love salt so that says a lot!) and the dan dan consisted of bed of what seemed to be dehydrated ramen. Why tho? The tuna poke wasn't even poke. It was seared tuna, which is very disappointing. To address the question in your response, our meal was about an hour ago.
I have only positive things to say about the Trailhead on State Street in Black Mountain North Carolina. The food was great. Service was exceptional. Ambience was wonderfully funky. My husband had a cheeseburger and fries, I had a kale salad, and we split a Green mountain Porter beer. With the tip, the total was under $30.
Unfortunately the Black Hen is now closed but it was easily the best restaurant in the area before their closing. I hope the owners are able to come back in the future but if not I thank them for their years of service and fantastic dining. Truly one of the best.
We have always had good food at The Black Hen. We wanted to go one more time before they went out of business (only to find out the next day that they will stay in business after all). Our waitress was super sweet and friendly. But, she had to deliver a lot of bad news. They weren’t offering cocktails (which they do well), due to not placing a liquor order this week. The menu was even tinier than usual, so our choices were extremely limited (esp for someone with a shrimp sensitivity). We all ended up ordering the filet mignon medallions that were supposed to come with mashed potatoes, we were told it would be French fries instead. The food that was available was very good. But, we had to pay the very high prices for a meal that was modified to what they happened to have left in the kitchen on the “last” night they were going to be open. It was a bit disappointing. Also the bathroom wasn’t very clean and tidy. For a fine dining venue, we weren’t very impressed.
They likely just didnt care because they were closing soon. Wasted money.
I have previously been here several times with good experiences. This time, however, was very different. We arrived about 3 hours after they posted on social media a post about their cocktails with a picture. As we were seated and reviewing the menu, I asked about cocktails and the waitress said that they are not doing cocktails because the bartender is in Germany and since the restaurant is going out of business they have not maintained their supply of liquor. Misleading marketing. We ordered the charcuterie which I have had several times before. This time, however, it was much smaller with only 1 cheese, couple slices of ham, and very stale days old bread. They did replace the bread with better softer bread once we complained. Overall, very disappointed.
We ate at the black hen tonight and my family and I absolutely loved every bit of it the food was amazing and the atmosphere was great. The chef cooked probably some of the best food I've ever had and I will definitely be back to order some more very soon. Worth every penny.
Wonderful meal. Great service. Went graduation weekend. Hope to come back someday.
