Very rude experience by a self-assigned coffee elitist. Definitely not a Bourdain friendly kind of place. I'm a chemist and he couldn't explain even the basics of his "art" to us. We were told it would take an hour to brew, so we never had the chance to try this lovely gentleman's coffee. But definitely go here if you're in to $7 lattes that take an hour to make and want to discuss why he can't stock basic supplies because of the impending apocalypse.
I feel like I lost my coffee virginity here…I had no idea coffee could be special, an experience. John’s espresso has always been my benchmark anywhere I’ve traveled to the specialty coffee cafes of Europe and N America.Recently I got my home espresso setup (niche zero grinder / Flair 58), and followed 50 hours of tutorials, tossing most of the shots down the drain. Today, I lugged all my gear into d’bolla. By our 3rd shot we had pulled the enviable ‘god shot.’ Very excited to have incredible espresso at home. Thanks john!!
Loved my experience here. The owner and patrons were very friendly and I enjoyed my espresso. I will be back for more!
The coffee is half the experience and to say it's excellent is an understatement. Beside the creamy, delicious rich flavor of the Americano I ordered, John was just that much more of a treat. His spicy take on his craft is both enlightening and equally entertaining. You wanna know anything about espresso? John's your man. I'm very much looking forward to coming back.
One of the rudest, most condescending experiences I've had at a coffee shop. Advised me I was "wasting his product" by ordering a cappuccino. Suggested I was being disrespectful for requesting the order to-go (i had to get to a meeting). Insulted me trying to make basic conversation - "where are your beans from?" "how does siphon coffee work?" etc.An extra star as the coffee was truly delicious. He clearly DOES know his craft and is excellent at it. I will never return however as someone who enjoys their craft this much should WANT to teach and educate instead of condescend and ridicule.
Definitely a coffee experience and educational visit. Enjoyed it! Thank you John!
I had the best latte I have ever had by far. The espresso was pulled absolutely perfect, not a hint of a burned or sour taste, and he steamed the almond milk perfect as well (which can be really hard with alternative milks)The owner comes off just a bit rude and dismissive. I usually like just a hint of sugar, but when I asked the owner it was a short and very dismissive reply-and made me feel very awkward or rude for having asked. They don’t carry sugar, which is completely ok! My boyfriend also felt uncomfortable with some other ways he talked to us. I think he can just come off as mocking or rude, but I don’t think he means to be! just know that he is more an expert in his coffee and that that will be what you’re coming for!But again, even without the sugar, it seriously didn’t need it and it made me glad I had it without. He seriously knows what he is doing, I listened in on him talking about specifics of brewing a coffee with a man there. He is very intelligent, and his words came through with the absolute perfect results I got in my latte. :)I feel after having it, that I could even have just a straight doppio which is hard to find in Utah without it tasting burnt.
This is one of the best and most unique coffee shops that I have visited. Be prepared for an experience and to learn something new about coffee.Don't come if you want a pumpkin spice mocha with sugar free sweetener prepared in 30 seconds or less. This is a place for coffee lovers. The offerings are limited but prepared with care and excellence.
Really great spot. You can tell the owner really cares about his product and his craft. He's personable and is happy to help you order and experiment. The coffee has been great. I also like the boba tea. His pearls are homemade and have great flavor. The ingredients used for the teas are real and quite a bit better quality than you'll find elsewhere (it seems many places use syrups now).
So here's the deal. The coffee here is very good. Easily five stars, but the owner is VERY opinionated about coffee. He will literally insult you to your face about your coffee preferences if he disagree with you. I'm not even sure he realizes he is insulting you. Don't take it personally! Coffee is his passion, it is his art. If you think you can handle that, come here and enjoy the excellent coffee. If this will bother you, go someplace else. It's just that simple.
