Fun note… The young man at the table behind us who was talking very loudly was trying to impress his date by regaling her with his favorite episodes of How I Met Your Mother… And how he was trying to improve his signature so people could read it… Don’t be this guy. Instead order some food! Wow! Native American inspired cuisine…? I had no idea what to expect. We started with an Arnold Palmer and chased it with a Black sheep salad. Excellent. The Tres Tapas Sampler was great. Basically it’s three fried bread tacos each with a different type of sauce- one barbecue (Which was surprising this sweet), one green and one red… All delicious. Note this is not Mexican - it’s more nuanced and delicious. It’s a cool menu and there is so much left to try. Hog Jowl Nachos? I hear they are delicious, but I wasn’t in a jolly mood. Getting these next time. By the way the service was outstanding and the interior is funky cool.
I wanted to take my wife on a date to a local restaurant that we’ve never tried. I discovered Black a sheep Cafe and the idea of Native American cuisine sounded interesting. We ordered the spicy shrimp and cheese grits as an appetizer, which was outstanding! We ordered the chimichanga and blue tortilla enchiladas, both of which were also very tasty. We had a side of Rosemary fries, which were okay.Overall, the food was a very good portion size and tasted fresh. It was all delicious and we were happy that we came. Prices were a bit high, which we expected, but it was a great experience. Would definitely come again.
A delicious way to experience Native American food.We visited on a Tuesday evening and it was still fairly busy. We were seated immediately. The inside is tastefully decorated, and the building it’s in is eclectic and unique. The hostess and our waitress were both very friendly. The menu is big enough to have something for anyone while small enough to ensure quality. They also offer a modest beer/drink list.We ordered the green chile frites, Navajo tacos with pork, and the hog jowl tacos. I asked for the hog jowl tacos to be served on fry bread, like their other Navajo tacos are.The green chile frites were served quickly. They were good and reminded me of poutine. The tacos were served after we finished our appetizer. It was refreshing for a restaurant to actually follow proper timing practices for serving. The Navajo tacos were good. The hog jowl meat was the best part. The meat was sweet and savory, almost like a dinner bacon. The rice and beans on the side were good. I thought the rice tasted spot on for being cilantro lime. The beans were okay, but the sauce was oddly watery.
I visited the Black Sheep twice during my short stay in Provo. Plainly decorated place, emitting a warm and cozy atmosphere. Staff is very helpful and friendly. I really enjoyed the Nickel Buffalo burger and the Southwestern Fried Chicken. Reasonable prices.
We were told that this restaurant has exceptional food. We thought it was okay, but not exceptional. It's not that big and the way the seating is set up it can get really crowded. Our seating area was very small and it felt a bit cramped. There were three of us having lunch. The restaurant was pretty crowded by the time we got there. Our server was very friendly and got our order correctly. It was so busy that she didn't really have time to check back and see how things were going once our food was served. I think my husband would have appreciated asking her to add a little more heat to his meal. He ordered the green chile stew and it was served lukewarm. I wasn't that hungry so I ordered a side of cilantro-lime rice and a side of pinto beans. My husband and I both agreed that our food didn't have that much flavor. We'll probably pick somewhere else to eat next time we're in town.
Although we didn’t make a reservation and the place was busy, we were seated very promptly. The waitress was friendly and helpful. We had the hog jowl nachos, which could have been a little hotter but were otherwise delicious. My wife got the steak tacos and enjoyed them, I got the traditional Navajo taco with green chili pork. It was very tasty, the rice and beans were flavorful. Pretty pricey but the food is high quality! Plus, not many places you’ll find authentic fry bread.
It was yummy but expensive It was a place that didn’t really excite me. We ordered a few different things to share. We ordered the filet Mignon bruschetta and that was the one thing we enjoyed the least. It didn’t seem like bruschetta at all and the bread that it was on was really hard. We didn’t finish it.we also ordered some nachos and the traditional Navajo taco and we enjoyed both of those. I would come back if I have a coupon or something. Wasn’t bad but also wasn’t my favorite.
It had unusual food which I liked. The food was reasonable and tasty but the drinks were expensive. The atmosphere and decor was modern.
For a first-time experience, I can't say enough good about this cafe. During my one-week visit, my daughter and I ventured here two times. The first time we both ordered the Navajo Tacos. She ordered the Red Chili Beef and I ordered the Green Chili Pork. Each plate came with a side of refried black beans and seasoned rice. On our second visit, we went late in the evening and shared the Hog Jowl Nachos. I must say each visit we also ordered cocktails and they exceeded our expectations. We tried the Bishop, the Mule, the mint julep, and the jalapeno margarita. This place was definitely worth a second visit.
Went in to celebrate my partner’s new job and had the best time, as always. Black Sheep is, by far, my favorite restaurant in Provo. This time we had the filet bruschetta, fried chicken, and a Navajo taco, all of which were stellar. Our server, Sam, was a delight and she got us a crème brûlée to help us celebrate our evening. Also she lit it on fire and had us laughing the whole evening! We went in to have a casual evening and were treated to the best dinner and service we’ve had in a while.
