Herbert’s is one of my favorite places to go for Tex-Mex in Central Texas. I’ve been coming here since 1980 and it’s definitely comfort food that I crave. The salsa they bring out with the chips is delicious. I live 45 minutes away but it’s totally worth the drive. The service is always quick and the quality of the food is consistent. Don’t believe the 1 star haters.
Good Mexican food. Pretty standard Texas Mexican food. Last thursday about 6:30 we were floating the river and wanted something to eat. The evening we went it was very loud and very crowded. Had a 15 minute wait. Got a Margarita and it was very very sweet. I asked why it was so sweet. They said their Margaritas ? are made with wine ?, not you're a typical Tequila Margarita. So just be aware that these margaritas are not the ones you're used to drinking. They are fine if you just want a alcoholic drink but if you're used to and want a good margaritas I would skip this. This is a great location if floating the river.
Herbert's Taco Hut is an institution in San Marcos, and has been in business for decades. My visit was my first in many years, and the ambience, service and food were still exceptional! My cheese enchiladas and chalupa were tasty beyond measure!
A small, busy Mexican restaurant serving authentic Tex-Mex cuisine that is well worth the wait. Street tacos were excellent, beef and chicken fajitas were also very tasty. Guacamole was freshly made. Sopapillas and flan were made in-house and very good. Highly recommend this place.
Met a friend for lunch and had pretty high hopes for this place as it was recommended to me as a great place. Things started off great with super fresh salsa and light, crispy chips. Unfortunately, the chips and salsa were pretty much the high point of the lunch. We ordered some queso to snack on while we went over the menu and found it to be extremely thin and completely lacking in spice. For a Mexican food place this was some serious gringo queso. For lunch I ordered Herbert's Special Combo plate that came with a cheese enchilada, bean and cheese tostada, crunchy taco, rice and beans, and added some guacamole. Thank goodness I got the guac. The cheese enchilada was filled with either American cheese or just plain Velveeta. Not good at all. The enchilada sauce was pretty good, though. Adding a little of the fresh salsa to the enchilada made it edible. The taco meat was just OK and the shell seemed store bought. I expected more in a taco from a place called the Taco Hut. The tostado was not much better as it had the same bland cheese as the enchilada and the beans tasted a little burned. The guacamole was awesome and helped everything else out. The lettuce and tomatoes that came with the taco and tostada were fresh and the tomato was surprisingly red and flavorful for this time of year. My friend ordered a chicken fried steak and it looked pretty good and she said she really enjoyed it. I'm not sure but it might have even been the real deal and not a frozen one. Good to know there is a decent non-Mexican food option for friends/family who aren't crazy about Mexican Food and end up here with a group. Our server was great and kept our chips supplied and our water filled. There was just something lacking in the flavor and authenticity of the food. I was hoping for much more. Maybe this was just a bad day and the kitchen was doing the best with what they had. If that was the case, I would have preferred to know what type of cheese to expect in/on my food so I could have opted for the Bobby's special (fajita tacos) or the street tacos.
I’d asked our hotel where a good place was to grab some Mexican food and drinks. She highly recommended this place. We went in with high expectations despite the dumpy building. This place has apparently been there for years, however we found out the place had no liquor license and had limited beer selection in which they didn’t even have the ingredients to make a michaleda. What beer they did have was served in a plastic mug that just came out of the dishwasher, so it was still hot. The food was a disappointment as well. No flavor at all. Not sure how this place is still in business?
My go-to for Mexican food in San Marcos for the past 20+ years. Always delicious, always consistent, never a bad experience. We started with some yummy chile con queso with the chips & salsa. My flautas were crispy and the chicken was shredded and chopped so it didn't all come out with the first bite. Refried beans and rice were perfection. The hubbs' combo plate was amazing with a cheese enchilada, crispy beef taco, and a bean & cheese chalupa, rice & beans. Even if there's a wait, it's well worth it.
The classic Mexican restaurant of San Marcos. This place is timeless and has been here for decades for great reason. Everything is high quality and very fresh. I've never seen this place not nearly full, and that's because it's amazing food for a very fair price. No other Mexican restaurant in San Marcos can even compete. My parents used to go there every week while students at Texas State. When I was a student, it was my go-to. Now that my brother is a student, we often meet-up there for lunch.
Service is very good food is great love this place
My personal favorite are their cheese enchiladas, specifically on their special day Wednesday. They're more consistently good for the Wednesday lunch special. Their nachos are great as well, in addition to their sweet tea. Been coming here for years. It's not always great and I don't like everything on the menu, but I'll keep coming back.
