The restaurant was thoroughly underwhelming in every regard. The setting is festive enough but the service and the food rather mediocre, especially for vegetarians or vegans (or food allergies) — to their credit it seems they try to accommodate these needs and/or preferences, but the end result is simply deleting queso or sauce or other important components of the dish — my wife is vegetarian and has a dairy allergy, and her entree ended up as partially cooked vegetables in a tortilla. YMMV.
The food was fabulous. The decor is precious. The bakery is so delicious and cheap!! We bought 7 desserts and paid less than $13. Their Strawberry and cream puffs were so good we went back and bought more.
A very famous spot indeed, so we stopped for some bakery items. The wait for tables was insane and the bakery line wasn't much better, but they kept things moving pretty well. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The tres leches cake was amazing. The bakery section as a whole has something for everybody!
This restaurant was recommended by locals and was everything you would expect from a authentic Mexican restaurant in Mexico. The attached bakery has some great goodies in case you want to take something back for later and the staff is amazing! Be prepared for a wait, the word is out and it gets busy.
Food was above average, Nice spicy salsa but appeared to be canned and not freshly prepared. Wait staff was acceptable but not really attentive.
Wasn’t really that impressed with service or food. We ordered cheese dip/queso, kind tasted like velvetta with onions mixed in. Although the salsa was good. One of us ordered chicken enchiladas and the chicken was okay but the green sauce on top did not have taste. The other ordered the Mexican dinner. The sauce that was on top of a tamale should not be there. Totally takes away the taste of a tamale and enchilada. Waitress was more concerned about a bigger table but understandable, I guess. Although the bakery looked decent, the line was incredibly long and since dinner wasn’t that fantastic, we decided against it. Overall, don’t know if I would go back and try again.
A large family owned touristy restaurant, that has been well-established in the community for many years. It is located in a quaint market, in the center of the city. They do not take reservations. Upon entering, the decor is quite festive, as if a Mexican parade is hanging from the ceiling and all over the walls. I am sure whoever decorated, must have had a great time doing it. The employees are dressed in authentic colorful costumes, to add to the ambience. It is a perfect place for a photo op, if you are a tourist. The restaurant is sizable with 3 areas, a large bar, extensive beautiful extensive bakery, and large dining area. Sometimes there is a very long wait, and sometimes you may get seated quickly, as that process is hit or miss. Once seated, the menu is generous and the servers are pleasant and attentive. They even have strolling musicians that visit the tables before you dine, and for a small fee, you can request a song or two. Chips and salsa is complimentary, however, I did not like the chips. They were tasteless. For the entree, I chose one of the specialty items, called Puebla. It was a tender baked chicken dish with a delicious dark mole sauce, served with rice and beans. The chicken was delicious, especially if you asked for a little extra sauce. However, the beans and rice were not very flavorful; beans tasted rather pasty and dry. I tasted my friend's beef enchilada, and it was very good. The cheese tortillas were not good. So, I would say the food is hit or miss, depending on what is ordered. The food comes out pretty quickly, and portions are plentiful for the price. I did not order dessert from the menu items, however, purchased a few selected desserts from the bakery out front to go. Bring your patience, as the line is long and moves extremely slowly. The lemon cake with whipped cream was decent, however, I did not like any of the cookies, after trying 3 kinds. They looked beautiful, but not very good. My family and friends that tried the tres leche cake, said it was wonderful! If I travel to San Antonio again, I would perhaps come back to try other items on the menu. By the way, parking is not easy, since the restaurant is always crowded, and open late. It might even be a 24 hr location to dine.
Delish food! Great service! Loved the Mariachi band and other music! The bakery items looked awesome, however, we didn’t purchase anything.
Had to wait a little bit but that was expected and was not long. Great service by Esmeralda Garcia… very attentive! Food was great.
I came here with my family during a visit to San Antonio. It’s strange that my review was taken down.As I stated in my original post, upon walking in, we were greeted warmly by the waiters and saw a wonderful assortment of pan dulce. The charm ended when we noticed the waitresses are required to wear poorly made, cheap dresses meant to imitate traditional Mexican dresses worn in certain regions of Mexico. The dresses look like costumes. However, we were still looking forward to the food but we were also left dissatisfied. The food was more like salty Tex-Mex than actually authentic Mexican food. It’s completely overpriced. The restaurant is baiting white non-Mexican tourists and we completely regret having gone here. This restaurant is a poor representation of Mexican cuisine and culture. The wait staff is also extremely overworked. I mention it because our waitress began to raise her voice and talk down to one of us for requesting help once we received our food. I don’t blame her, I blame the people in charge. If your wait staff is over worked and overwhelmed, it only results in a bad environment and experience for everyone. I should mention this was on a Monday evening.Needless to say, we will not be returning. Stay away from this place. Ask a local for recommendations on Mexican food if that’s what you’re looking for. It’s a shame this business exists in the place of something that could be truly remarkable and gives proper respect and justice to Mexican food and culture. Sigh.
