Authentic Mexican with Tex-Mex options available. Made fresh. Not overly salted or spicy. That's what salsas are for. Mexican beers on tap. Chips and salsa provided but is $1:50 for more chips and the salsa bowl is tiny. Used to also give you queso, but it tasted like high school football nacho cheese sauce, so no loss there.
Okay, but nothing special. The guacamole was good but not exceptional (it needed more spice). The same with the enchiladas. The chili relleno was a bit better than average and my wife liked the rice but the salsa was bland and the chips appeared to be dorito chips or similar. We probably will not go back, there are too many better restaurants in Rowlett.
Once and done. Good and bad experience. I devour chips and salsa. But wait the salsa comes in a shot sized ramekin. After 3 they charge 50 cents each. Ordered the combo fajitas, asked for extra onions which were almost non existent. Fajitas had a good flavor. Me and the wife split em. Asked for more tortillas and they charge 1.50 for extra of those also. We found out almost at the end of our meal they offer different salsas, green and red u can add to your meal of salsa to heat it up. The table behind us were offered those when they sat. Refills are free but never got one. Finished my drink and sat the cup at the edge of the table and it got passed over 2 or three times. Tipped my waiter 20% even though the service was worth a 1.00 tip. Hate to admit will take my business elsewhere. Wish the restaurant the best but they are gna have to change if they expect to survive.
We decided to try a new place. Mexican food is our families fav so we were excited to try this place. Instantly felt weird when we walked in. The bar was literally covered with dirty dishes. All booths were covered with trash. There was a basket of chips sitting on the counter when we first walked in…it took the waitress 10 minutes to even acknowledge us and, when she did, she brought over the basket of chips that had been sitting on the bar…the were gross and stale. Very very unimpressed. I have never walked out of a restaurant before but I did today. Will not go back.
The servers were really nice and the food was good. The tampiquena was fantastic and the barbacoa tacos were perfect. They should really add a specific combo meal section to their menu. The environment was subtle and not overly crowded. We were there from 5pm-7pm on a Thursday. From surveying the floorplan, it looks like it was once maybe a bar that was turned into a restaurant? Or a restaurant that aspires to be a bar?The decor isn't impressive. From the street the interesting facade looks like the place has potential. Once you get inside it's utilitarian but unimpressive. It seems to not have an identity other than it's menu & delicious food. It's a building with a long bar and a bunch of tables & booths. There's a huge projection screen at one end so, combined with the bar and overall layout, it could be a good "game day" destination if they decide to go that way. They could really elevate the ambiance by painting the walls like an authentic mexican village or something. The food is worth the trip but the decor isn't going to make anyone fall in love with the place and make it their date night go-to place... Thus the 4 stars.
****CHARGED $25 for extra chips and salsa*****We have been going since they have opened and think the food is decent and service has always been a little to a lot slow. Tonight my family of 4 adults and two children under 4yrs went there for dinner. We ordered a large guacamole and enjoyed chips and salsa while we ordered and waited for our dinner as you would in any other Mexican restaurant. The bill comes and almost $25 ($13 n change for chips and $11 in salsa). I ask about the charge and the waitress says we started charging for extra chips and salsa. I told them we have been coming there since they have opened and they have never charged us for extra chips and salsa. The waitress and old lady that’s always at the register just said it’s in the menu (waitress fumbles through the bifold two page menu looking before she finally finds it on the back page at the bottom in little print “extra chips $1.50”. I asked if we were never told even after 9 chips (baskets are tiny ask anyone that’s been here) how were we supposed to know that and getting charged $2 a piece for each tiny cup of salsa equaling a bill for two people in chips and salsa alone is RIDICULOUS!!! We will not be back as there are several other go to Mexican restaurants with better food and don’t rip people that’s supported the establishment since their opening over trivial chips and salsa. WILL NOT BE BACK!
This is a hidden gem! My husband and I stopped by tonight after living in rowlett for 1.5 years. We wish we came here a year ago. Our server, Michele was so sweet and attentive. I ordered the Juan tacos with cheese - al pastor. Spicy and such bold flavor! So good! My husband got the beef fajitas, which came sizzling and were super tender. I would pass on the queso, but the salsa and chips are amazing! We love spicy and bold flavors and this will be our new spot. There was also live music (Friday dinner) which was a great way to spend our evening. I also ordered the mangonada (frozen mango margarita) and loved the tajin and candy but I probably would not order again, as I prefer a regular margarita. Definitely would recommend. Good for families, date or girls night out. Smaller building but did not feel crammed. Will be coming back!
Oh my goodness!I have been wanting to check this place out for awhile and finally did today.I am very, very picky with my Mexican food (being Mexican, we usually are). You know how you go to a sit down place and the booths are too small? You sit and the table is too close? Well, not here, the booths were nice and roomy. I really like the atmoshephere and the Pancho Villa theme. The complementary chips and salsa were a clue as to how good the food was going to be. The chips were fresh and the salsa was full of flavor. My husband and I ordered the beef nachos to share as an appetizer. They were so good! We thought the beef was going to be ground beef but surprisingly it was real beef thinly chopped and Sliced. The nachos chips were home made fried tortillas, hot and crunchy. Delicious! Our main dishes were delivered piping hot. He had the gorditas plate with tripas and al pastor. The tripas were the perfect combination of crunch and chewiness and al pastor bursting with flavor.I ordered the combination plate with guiso de puerco and mole. The mole was the traditional red chicken mole. The sauce was full of flavor. It was nice and sweet with the right amount of chocolatey. For the guiso, the pork was very tender and equally flavorful.Everything was superb. If we had eaten at Gloria's the dishes would have easily been $15 each but for $9.99? This meal was a steal. All in all, everything was so good. I wish I had tried one of their margaritas but I will the next time we go, because there will be a next time and many more.Go check this place out and give them the support they deserve.
Waited forever for our food and it was tasteless. Never got refills on our drinks.
