The food is so good!! The drinks didn’t disappoint either. To drink, I ordered a virgin piña colada and my partner ordered a virgin strawberry daiquiri. For the appetizer, we ordered the quesadillas which were out of this world. I mean just like at them!! We were not expecting the food portions to be so huge (we’re new-ish to Texas, okay?) so we definitely ordered way more than two people could eat. But we left two happy and very full people. Also the staff is so friendly! Our server was amazing! I wish I remembered her name. We will definitely be back next time we’re near Gruene!
Friendly staff, very good food, and a cool atmosphere. My wife and I both had the chicken fried steak with gravy - I had the fries on the side and she had the mashed potatoes. We both thought the steak was well-prepared and tasty, with a very good breading on it. It's easy to see why this is a favorite dish here. My wife thought the mashed potatoes would have more garlic flavor based on the menu description but they still tasted good.Portions were large - we probably could have split an entree and been fine but decided we wouldn't mind some leftovers and are glad we got our own plates. We also left room for dessert and the Jack Daniels Pecan Pie really hit the spot. I thought the chocolate chips, while not necessary, complimented it well. My wife thought it needed more chocolate based on its description. We had been told prices were a bit high but we didn't think so. If we're near Gruene again, we'd like to go back and try some other dishes since everything coming to the tables around us looked great.
The food was spot on, service was good but it’s just too hot in the summertime. Most of the seating, if not all is in open air seating. There is no AC except in the bathrooms. If it’s 100 degrees outside it’s every bit as hot inside. Again the food is great it’s just almost too unbearable to eat it which is a shame.
Lunch and drinks were so good we returned for dinner! Sitting outside with the trees and a view of the river, being served by very attentive servers, was relaxing and comfortable. However, if air conditioning is a must-have for your dining pleasure, you might be a tad warm during the summer. All the positives outweigh that little inconvenience!
Sit outside even if it’s hot. Feels like you’re in a tree house and it’s much cooler than inside. Great food, great drinks (highly recommend the frozen sangria) and great service!
We were seated immediately upon arrival and cordially escorted to our assigned table. Our server Bryce promptly took our orders for drinks, an appetizer and entrees. All were served in a timely manner. Onion rings were plentiful, hot and delicious. Catfish meals were also delivered hot with ample portions. Bryce was attentive and followed up with us regularly throughout the meal. Our dining experience was very enjoyable. We shall return.
Great location. Overall a wonderful experience. The food is BIG portions and absolutely delicious!!!! If you leave hungry, that’s your own damn fault! We took away HALF of our meals and were so FULL!!!!! View of the Guadalupe River, tables shaded by trees and umbrellas. Lovely setting for lunch and probably even more so for dinner. We will have to come back another time for dinner though. Our server Andrea and the manager Chloe were very sweet. This is a must restaurant!
Had a large group of family and friends for lunch. A busy Memorial Day weekend for a High School graduation. The Grist Mill responded as though they only opened to serve us. Table for twelve attended by our waitress Taryn and we never wanted or waited for anything. The food was fabulous, but O-o-oh those onion rings!
Gristmill River Restaurant offers relaxing indoor and outdoor seating. It’s large and spacious. Much of the outdoor seating offers shaded areas with hilltop views of the Guadalupe River. There was a diverse menú of fish, seafood, steak and burgers. It was good but not great. However the reasonable prices makes this a perfect location for families and dates.
Walk-in or the waitlist (got lucky and immediate seating) either eat inside or outside - on the patio - or climb the stairs to a nice river view. Polish Wedding Sausage - Ribs - Lime Rita - Sangria and a nice view with a gentle breeze overlooking the Guadalupe. I was here pre-pandemic/pandemonium now a few more trees but a relaxing al Fresca dining. The Polish Wedding sausage is a mild kielbasa four six inch pieces of sausage with a side of coleslaw and a sangria. There is a consensus this is the best of the sausage. The ribs were fall off the bone tender, Very good and side also of coleslaw. The coleslaw was a tad dry. The mayonnaise dressing was all at the bottom, The lime margarita was definitely lime. Fresh lime and tart with a Tequila edge. It was good but if you are looking for a sweet drink look elsewhere. Ran out of room for dessert. Bathrooms look like outhouses from the outside they are outside the main building. Inside standard flushing toilets and sinks that ran water. I had so much fun I forgot pictures. The parking near the restaurant is minimal there is a parking area up the street so wear comfortable shoes the area is uneven. Also walking to your table may include walking down and up steps, at the restaurant. The town has a plethora of shops including the Famous Gruene Dance Hall that will get you to the center of town. BTW Gruene is pronounced Green really.
