What a difference a year makes. The first time I went here I loved the beignets but the rest of the food was just okay. On my recent visit the food really stepped up. The flavor was spot on and the beignets were still over the top great. We had an array of dishes and were very impressed with the food overall. Super nice staff and very attentive. The decorations and small store in the back are great touches to add to that New Orleans vibe.

The best REAL Cajun food you'll find in Houston!! The staff treats you like family. in there at least twice a week and even more during crawfish season!!!! I love the seafood gumbo, friend catfish, fried shrimp, potato salad, bread pudding... basically everything??

Their fry game is on point. Cauliflower app and po boy were great, needs pickles. Batter is tasty and stays put. Gumbo was disappointing and beignets were tasteless and too dense, more like hush puppies covered in powder sugar. Service was excellent.

Visited for the first time this past Saturday and I was impressed. The service is great and the food was cooked fresh. Everything we ordered was great especially the boudain balls and crawfish. Katy was our waitress, she was extremely personable and helped with recommendations which I appreciated. We never had to wait long for anything so that speaks volumes about the service. Thank you!

Yummy food!!! I enjoyed my blackened catfish with rice covered in fondue. The bread pudding was a mouthwatering dessert. The Mardi Gras decorations were authentic. They even had a piano and microphone just like the clubs on Bourbon Street. The final item that makes you feel like you are in New Orleans was a framed photo of Louis Armstrong on the wall. Verna Mae's is a wonderful dining experience!!! ❤️❤️❤️

What can I say about Verna Mae's. The food was authentic and delicious, the atmosphere was friendly, the waitstaff was top notch, and the entertainment was great. The music was versatile and I had a blast. The restaurant is BYOB there's that. Will definitely be returning Friday for the live music, crawfish, and friendly faces. I was being greedy so I more than enough food and the price was still reasonable.

Verna Mars was great! The good was awesome! The service was a little slow, but because the owners were at their child's school athletics. So, I can live with the show service. Family owned and family oriented. I can get behind that.

Such awesomely good food. Ordered the roast beef debris fries with pepper jack cheese and grilled onions. Amazing. So good and would definitely get them again and again.

Great vibe! Server Katy is awesome, checked on us in good spaced times, and has a great sense of humor. The food was good - just wish they had a more expanded menu, especially in the seafood area. The first time we went was the start of Mardi Gras, and had a good crowd without being packed. Fat Tuesday was another matter! I had stopped to vote after work, so didn't get there until after 7 pm. Luckily, friends had gotten there before 5 pm and had saved us seats. I was starving, but they'd stopped taking food orders as they were 2 hours behind. I ended up getting a pizza from the Indian place in the same strip mall (which was REALLY good!) and taking it back to Verna Mae's.The band was awesome!! Just wish they'd set up on the side facing the parking lot, and not the street. We could have heard them better.

It was our first visit and the beginning of Madi Gras, the "joint was hopping" to the sounds of old school NOLA jazz. My wife had the roast beef PO-Boy, dressed with tomato, lettuce and cheddar cheese. She said it had an interesting flavor, and was much better with the added veggies. Katy, our server, was great! Checked on us several times and when my wife couldn't decide on a daiquiri flavor, Katy brought her little samples of them all. My wife really liked the white Russian, but said, "we don't like Russia right now! So she went with the Blue Lemonade. I had the 6 inch shrimp PO-Boy with all the trimmings minus the bacon, it was delicious. For dessert we shared bread pudding, it was good but rather bland, they don't use cinnamon, nuts or raisins due to the possibility of allergic reactions. We had a good time and an enjoyable meal. An expanded menu to include other types of fish would be nice.
