Cafe Brussels lives up to it's rep for excellent food and top notch, very personal service. I wish we had time to go more frequently. It is like going to an old friend's house for an evening of stimulating conversation in a comfortable atmosphere. You can spend an hour, or stay for the evening.Last night was Mary-Grace's first day on the job but she handled it well. A Tuesday evening and small groups continued to stream in. The cuisine was rich and tasty, not necessarily for someone on a diet. Catherine, the owner, remembered us and checked on us several times without interrupting our socializing. She must have found - or trained - a good chef. It was scrumptious. And we shared a creme brulee for dessert.
I wished our waitress spoke English I think we would have had a better experience. I really wanted to ask about Belgium culture and cuisine, what a “croquette “ was etc etc. but she couldn’t understand us. I ended up just picking What I thought was safe but it turned out different - it was okay taste wise but I think that’s just because it wasn’t what I would have ordered had I known .Overall this place deserves a 2nd chance. I would try again but maybe after reading the reviews and seeing what people ordered and enjoyed since can’t depend on wait staff.
We really wanted to like this place. Alas, it fell way short of expectations. We walked in from the back parking lot and there was a funky smell that greeted you. The floor was sticky as we walked to our table. I ordered the salmon bearnaise, asking several times if the salmon was fresh and being assured it was. It most definitely was not — rubbery and tasteless, and the sauce was heavy and pretty tasteless too. My wife had a sampler plate of the vaunted mussels, and they were swimming in heavy sauces. The waitress didn’t appear to speak much English at all, which made communication difficult (we don’t speak French). The best thing about the place is the Belgian beer selection. So go for that, and skip the pricey food.
This wonderful, quaint restaurant is the perfect place for a Sunday Brunch, or week day dinner. The dark wood and wonderful music on Sunday made our brunch perfect. The service was friendly and fast. The owner was there and her wonderful thick accent made the visit even better. The food was hot, fresh and very good. There is good parking right behind the building.
Went to brunch at 1:00 PM on Sunday. It was very busy but the food and service was so good. I started with the mussel soup which was a creamy bisque with lots of tender mussels. My second course was a seafood crepe. Although it was stuffed with a generous amount of seafood, the sauce lacked any distinct seasoning, unlike the flavorful soup. The third course was the Classic Belgium Waffle with whipped cream and fresh strawberries. I wanted to dive headlong into that crispy (not too sweet) waffle. I could have had more but it was near to closing time and knowing what it's like to work in restaurants, we did not linger...but next time.
Catherine is friendly and her soups are wonderful! I also love the look and feel of the restaurant, the tables, the chairs, the linen, the view, the utensils, the plates! The delicious crepes and savory teas are a favorite! I even love her collection of antique purses in the lady's bathroom. To me this place is My Getaway. I enjoy it every time!
An insult to Belgian cuisine, my wife and my daughters in law got not only the worst costumers service. The scampi tasted like plastic and the croque Monsieur was drenched in fat. They asked the bill and were asked if they did not like their food. Obviously when you leave your food almost untouched did this show enough they did not like it. She started to raise her voice and told them to get out and not to come back. Like they would go back to such place. Our advice is when you brag your over 20 years in business that’s its time to take back som classes in real Belgian cuisine and customers service.
Stopped in for lunch one Saturday. First time visit. Got there around 11:30 am and was the first patrons in. Nice clean quaint restaurant. Was greeted warmly and drinks orders take. Their menu has several lunch and dinner options on it along with beer selection and wine. I chose the Lunch/Brunch special. Your choose one item from 3 categories. I got the mussel soup, seafood crepe and the Belgian waffle. Everything was excellent, soup was very tasty. The seafood crepe was packed full of seafood, but was on the cool side. Seemed to be sitting out for a period of time before coming to the table. It came with a small salad with a nice dressing on it. The waffle was light and crispy, but on the menu it make it seem that it would come with the ice cream and chocolate but it did not, only strawberries and cream. My husband got the Belgium sugar which he enjoyed, The fries were large steak fries, but the were frozen ones, but OK. We enjoyed the food and atmosphere and plan on returning and trying the steamed mussels.
Sometimes you can visit and have great Belgian food, great Belgian beer and great Belgian brusqueness from Madame Catherine, the proprietor. Try the mussels, try the Kwok, try the croquettes. The taste is good, but sometimes you will receive a half portion without explanation if it is busy. Sometimes it will be Luke warm, rather than hot. But sometimes, sometimes it will be great and then - wow!
Went with some friends who had been to restaurant before. Went for lunch. They have free parking, the bar is a unique antique. Wood is beautiful. The food is plentiful and delicious.
