A just fine place for breakfast.Nothing impressive but not terrible either

Whenever we visit Houston, we stay in a hotel that is close to an Avalon Diner. Their breakfasts are delicious, and we always get a chocolate milkshake to go for my 92-year old mom.

We have given this business a couple of tries. The speed of service is definitely not quick by any stretch of the imagination. The Monday blue plate chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes with gravy is really pretty good. The chicken fried steak and the mashed potatoes literally cover the entire plate. So well worth the price for the meal that you get. The follow-up service part during the meal is about the same. As it appears there's only a couple of folks maintaining the tables for what is a fairly good size dining room. I'm not sure that we will be back as another guest was highly irritated, and was addressing the staff and cashier with nothing but f-bombs, one right after another. I don't know anything about this particular guest or their relationship with the business. But the cashier who was of senior status did not address the customer to curve his language as he was loud enough that anyone within the business could hear his comments including a member of the wait staff who started to address him from across the room. So I know he was loud enough that she could hear him a good 40 or so feet away. Disappointing....

Rude staff , poor food quality. Not worth the cost. Cheap diner food shouldn’t cost over $20 for 1. For 65 over clientele that like overpaying for nostalgia I guess. There’s Buffalo Grille, even House of pies for better food and service. Can cook eggs and hash browns at home for few bucks , pay to eat out to have service and quality food.

My experience today at Avalon was just okay.I did meet some nice folk in there which made my day.The customer service was very very good.I take nothing from that.I'm sorry however, the food it self was not.The dessert was not good I tried twice. Stay away from it like you would a pile of bees.First I got a coconut pie. Then I got the chocolate cake.Definitely not good not good!!!Please do yourself a favor avoid it at all cost. The coffee was not good either. EWW!!!The BLT was not good maybe it was the rye bread but it was sorta dry to.That was a bummer cause I had been craving it for a while. The only thingsthat was really good was the hot cocoa when I changed from the coffee to it and the curly fries.Man!!!They were good.Hot Crispy and fresh they were.Maybe I should have gotten breakfast.I was torn between the BLT and an omelette.I went with the BLT which was a (Bad idea).Again the staff was nice but a lot of them also kept wiping their noses with their bare hands using no sanitizer from what I could see. Like 50 percent of them did that.EWW!!!They need sanitizing stations everywhere if they're gonna keep that up.

Great staff, good food. Surprised it isn't more popular.

Today was my first visit to this diner. I went for breakfast and sat at the counter. I'm usually solo, so I like places with a counter or bar. For breakfast in a restaurant, the dish I usually order is called by different names ("garbage plate" or "kitchen sink breakfast" or "diner mess"). The rough equivalent at this restaurant is called the "Grill Cook's Medley" so that's what I ordered. I was hungry so I also ordered a cup of chili with onions because why not have chili with breakfast? Is there a bad time for chili? Everything on the plate was prepared just the way I requested, portions were right, and it was tasty. The chili was also quite good, better than most I would say. A nice touch was their better jams and jellies, namely the fact that they had orange marmalade for my English muffin - something noteworthy that I really appreciate at places that have it. While the restaurant was clean and the food was good, the attentive, prompt, and truly friendly service also deserves praise. Service was the way it's actually supposed to be (water glass was kept filled, coffee topped off, check provided promptly, etc). I find service like that to be far from a given now at places in this class. Really it was just good, proper, well-executed service but that actually stands out to me these days and is worth mentioning. Other places should observe this place and do likewise. If I had to identify something negative, I suppose it could only be price. Who doesn't want to pay less for everything? But I did order the chili which was an unnecessary extra addition, so really the price was fair considering the overall meal. I was satisfied, even impressed, and certainly will return. Next time I may try lunch or dinner.

Atmosphere a little ..eh. Wait staff VERY attentive and down to earth. Prices good. Food satisfactory.

Great atmosphere, great service, good homemade food at a reasonable price. Really pleased they haven’t tried to fake the original 1938 decor as it makes the experience really special
