OMG! This was my first time trying Nigerian food. I didn’t know anything about African/Nigerian food walking into the restaurant. I didn’t even know the difference between Amala and Pounded Yam or Fufu. The nice lady in front recommended me the Goat Meat Stew and this other spinach dish she mentioned(sorry, I don’t know the name) and OH MY GOD. It was AMAZING. More than amazing! I’m Vietnamese and I try to explore other food cultures and this was the perfect introduction to Nigerian food. Not only did the food taste FRESH, but the ladies and guests were nice enough to explain me some things. The stew and spinach were spicy, BUT I LOVE MY FOOD SPICY. It was sooo flavorful! And the portion size was shareable! Will recommend to friends ✨
AMAZING Fill ! The food is excellent and feels exquisite to taste all the different flavors . The assorted meats in the dishes are cooked so well and the entrees leave you feeling fresh and full ! Loved the hospitality as well . Fantastic Eats ?
First time visiting this restaurant and trying red stew & fufu and it was great! Really friendly people and all of the food was fresh and cooked perfectly. Definitely going back, loved the whole experience!
Listen…. Egusi is my favorite but when I tried the Efro Riro……CHAI!!!!!! ???. It was so good I started craving it everyday, even in the morning!!! lol!! No joke. The Pomo is soooooo good and not super chewy it’s . The shaki is absolutely fantastic. If you come here you will love it!!
The food was really good. I ordered jollof rice with fish. I only gave a 4 star because the rice was so hot that was nose was literally running. Trust, I love and eat spicy or hot food all the time but this was almost unbearable.
Hello Sir/MaMy is Charles, I base in Nigeria Lagos. I will love to work with you from Nigeria here. Like getting your dry foodstuff like Egusi,Ogbono,Amala (yam-flour), Dry Ewedu, Dry ponmo bitter kola crayfish etc..,and ship it down to you. Please if interested here is my contact +2348035881577. Thank you.
I love spicy food, but the Jollof rice that was delivered to me was way too spicy. The beef that came with it was tough, it felt like I was chewing leather. I couldn't eat it and definitely could not share with my daughter who loves jollof rice. Had to throw it away.Secondly, on the uber app it says Nigerian Coke, that was the only reason I ordered it. Instead, I got the regular American can coke made with high fructose corn syrup.PS: Nigerian coke is made with pure cane sugar.
It’s was totally delicious. This is the real abula style. So much like Amalatohsure in lagos. Best Amala joint in Houston.
Great sauce but slow service and meat isnt tender .
My wife and I love food but west African and Nigerian food is something we don’t have in the Bay Area nor all the major cities we’ve explored. When planning our trip to Houston we knew we wanted to get some authentic West African and Nigerian food.Amala Joint did not disappoint. We got the okra stew w/ pounded yam and the jollof rice with beef.Let me first off by saying the food is flavorful and delicious. If you’re not adventurous and/or can’t handle spice this place may not be for you.Jollof rice — rice is so delicious, aromatic, fragrant and perfect chewy / al dente texture. It reminds me of jambalaya in many ways but more aroma. Beef is fried and goes perfectly with it. I wish there was 1 more piece of beef and less rice but otherwise delicious none the less.Okra stew — comes with mixed meats (not sure on which specifics) but dried salted fish, beef, and pork or beef intestine were some of the ones I was able to identify. Super flavorful, spicy (in a good way). It is a little messy to eat with hands due to the slimy nature of okra. Meant to be eaten with your hands but if you don’t want to messy I recommend using your spoon to flatten the pounded yam and add to the soup bite by bite.5/5 for sure!
