Hands down one of the best breakfast spots I've been to in the Austin area. We stopped by when they were providing a buffet breakfast and ate until we couldn't eat anymore. They also have a omelet bar where they will prepare it for you and bring it to your table. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive we never had an empty drink once. 10/10 recommend this to anyone looking for a casual breakfast or brunch.
Chicken-fried chicken was perfect!! Light batter, very tasty; salad very good. Liver and onions done "Mom's way" without batter..very good also. My husband said this was the closest to home cooking he's had around here!! Our waiter, however, was not the best but maybe he was new! Other waiters seemed to take care of their tables. We will go back!
Seated and placed our order with a young waiter. 45 minutes later, and having replaced our order with a second server because there was no order, we still had no food. 10 min later food comes but toast was wrong. 10 min later, waitress who was going to rectify the issue is still in far corner sitting on the back of a chair conversing with a customer. 10 min later new toast comes but breakfast has been finished. Flagged the waitress and asked for check. She quickly complied with that request. Left cash for the check. Dining with a retired food safety expert. Products being used on tables are not in labeled spray bottles. Will not return. But somehow I don’t think they care.
Spent $28+ on 2 take outs. The catfish plate had 3 nugget size pieces with no sauce, no butter or brown sugar for the sweet potato, No roll . The chicken fried chicken dinner had no roll, sweet potato condiments or butter. No utencils at all. Could the restaurant. Manager would not come to phone but relayed message via waitress they were sorry but could not do anything about it. On another note tried their Sunday Brunch once. Food containers were empty could not keep up with demand. Extremely crowded too many hands serving themselves. Kinda nasty. Not Giving SD any more business.
This was my second time here, but first for lunch. Breakfast was terrific last time (and available all day), but had to try the basic burger. Comes with chips but substituted fries. This was honestly the best burger I've had anywhere in Central Texas... maybe anywhere! Big thick patty, fresh veggies, tasty bun. Full range of classic comfort food on the menu, too. Very laid back and quiet place.
It was lunch. The food was good, for everyone in our group. I was looking for something less rich and tame, so I went for the fish. It was a generous portion, and had good flavor. I plan to go back again for more social visits. The only downside was the waiter did not return to check on us until it was time to get the bill, and from my seat I was not able to get their attention. So I did not have the opportunity to get mayo for my fries. ... I did not feel like getting up and walking back to the kitchen.
The Simmer Down is a fine example of a locally owned cafe with warm, casual atmosphere, friendly staff, and good (if not exotic) cooking at reasonable prices. It is located alongside Williams Drive, which is a major arterial street going northwest out of Georgetown. The restaurant is easy to miss because it is set somewhat below the level of the street and -- consistent with its name -- has a rather subdued sign, and the entrance is by a parking lot on the far side of the building. But it is worth a visit, including in warm weather for outdoor dining on its shaded patio.
Really good local place, unfortunately they do not open until 11:00 AM due to staffing shortages. Had the grilled chicken sandwich, and it was wonderful. Service was good too.
The waiter was really nice and the food was off the chain especially the coconut pie ?
Simmer Down was just ok. I ordered chicken fried steak with scrambled eggs and it was ok. The service was good and our server courteous and friendly. My chicken fried steak was a little too much done and could use a little more gravy. The eggs were buttery and good. Hash browns were nothing special. The biscuit was very tasty. Overall, the restaurant was well attended, clean and comfortable. Parking can be a chore at times. There is room for improvement and I will put this restaurant on my list to try again
