My buddy and I headed to Bailey's to give it a try but they were closed due to a family emergency. So we were hunting for somewhere else to eat and he remembered this place. It had some good reviews though not many reviews in total. But we were hungry so we decided to give it a try. Not one of our better experiences. First, let me say that the food we had wasn't "bad". And maybe in New Jersey it would be considered good BBQ. But it's nowhere close to being good in this area considering the competition and to call it Texas BBQ borders on false advertising. It didn't start out good when we were told they didn't have beef ribs (only on Saturday) even though it said Fri & Sat on the menu. They also apparently don't do cole slaw any more; even though it's still on the menu. And, oh yeah, in spite of what the menu says, they were out of one of the two choices for sausage. They were also out of cheese grits so our choices of sides were mac & cheese, beans or potato salad. I usually try a three meat plate at a new place to sample as many things as possible. But the choices were so limited here I had the two meat plate with pork ribs and sliced brisket. And for my sides I got the mac & cheese and the beans. The meat wasn't bad but there wasn't much flavor to it. It didn't appear it had been smoked for very long at all. The two ribs were pretty good sized but a significant portion of the one slice of brisket was pure fat. (See the picture I included with the review.) The mac and cheese was uninspired. The beans were ok. They had two different kinds of sauce but I couldn't tell much difference between them. I usually skip the sauce because I think the meat should speak for itself. However, here I used the sauce on the brisket to give it some flavor. My buddy had the same thing and felt the same as I did. He actually felt bad for suggesting this place. But hey, if you don't try, you don't know. My advice to others though is if you see it, keep driving. There are many better choices in a reasonably close proximity that can legitimately call themselves Texas BBQ.
Got to eat a lot of BBQ at my most recent visit here (and yes, that picture is from my visit). Was pleased overall at the taste and quality of the meats here. The sides were significantly better than average (beans were surprisingly tasteful) but the reason this place doesn't get higher marks is because of the competitive nature of BBQ in our area. There is very stiff competition in this business and small details do make a difference. It's not like you can make these things from scratch so unless you have tons of customers all the time you might be getting some slightly older or "more done" meats than some other places. It's just a challenge to be small in this field. Plenty of good food to choose from and you are likely to have a great experience and if you are a BBQ purest it still worth trying.
I will say this, growing up in Texas I've never been a fan of BBQ, but this spot just changed that lol. The food was simply amazing. After the first bite, I knew that this was my new go to spot. Everything was cooked very well. I got a brisket sandwich and a 2 meat plate that came with beef and turkey meat. Reasonably priced and it didn't take long to get my food.
4 words…BEST BREAKFAST TACOS EVER!I have eaten a many places so I stand by my statement. The homemade jalapeño jelly is the real deal.Friendly family owned business with excellent service. I can’t wait to go back!!
Nice small BBQ joint with about 8 small tables inside, counter with add’l 8 seats and room to eat outside. We had the Brisket and sausage. The brisket was very good. Not too much smoke and it seriously will melt in your mouth. Smoked cheddar sausage was also very good. Portions seem to be on the large size. They also serve domestic and a few craft beer brands. I like a place where you’ll find the owner working the counter. Worth checking out.
Just excellent Texas BBQ! Go for breakfast or lunch, you won’t be disappointed!
Brisket, egg, cheese tacos, or the infamous brisket biscuits, usually have 2 a week. Perfectly aged and seasoned, staff friendly and accommodating. You would do yourself a disservice if should you find yourself in the area (south side) near medical district and not try it. Tell the owners the Drover concierge recommended it.! Enjoy.
Always delicious BBQ, LOVE their Chipotle Mac!! Fun vibe, GREAT service & consistently great food. If they have their Beef Ribs, get it!! Breakfast is delish, we always make a point to stop in when we are in this area!! Hands on ownership and it shows. We will be back!!
Finally able to stop by after months of wanting too. Unfortunately didn't make it in time to get the Brisket Biscuit. But now I have a reason to go back. I did get the 2 meat plate (pulled pork, brisket) with sides of grits and potato salad and some burnt end. Grits weren't what I expected but had good flavor. Burnt Ends were spot on, loved the sauce that they put on top. Brisket and Pork bought were tender and tasty. Staff was friendly and place was clean. He directly has the right to claim Texas BBQ. Finger licking good and 2 thumbs up.
My God, the brisket is divine, the grits are southern heaven, and the banana pudding will make you feel reborn... for your taste buds that is. Wagyu brisket should be enough to convince you, but if it doesn't your loss.
