Excellent BBQ, nothing beats hecho en pozo the original way; that rich, tender, smoky flavor is totally different than when made in a crock pot, oven, roaster etc.
Vera’s BarBQ has been highly recommended by numerous TV shows and magazines such as: Texas Highways and Texas Monthly. All of their meat is cooked with local mesquite wood.We recently had them cook 30 pounds of Brisket for a party. The meat was cooked perfectly to your special instructions.
Been there a few times living right down the block. Texas monthly says their the best. I say bs, I've tasted way better barbacoa in Brownsville. I literally asked for red sauce, and guess what they gave me?BBQ sauce, I didn't realize till hours later. Bad service bad food I've tasted better barbacoa elsewhere. Believe Vera's aint that no more!
Tradition. Something to be said about tradition. Doing things the way they used to be done. Keeping the past alive. The last underground bbq pit in Texas, or something like that. Thing is when they write it up that way and you go there on a Friday to get bbq and then find out they only do it that way on Saturday, then you feel a little taken advantage of. I know some bbq places are only open one day a week but you know what they're selling when you get there. So we didn't have bbq here, on a Friday. I can honestly say that I don't know what I ate, but it tasted like it came off the top of a stove. The write up they received also said that it's not the best bbq, but if you wrap it in a tortilla and put salsa on it, it's not bad. I'll have to take there word for it. Please don't put this place back on a best of list if they don't have it the 3 days of the week they're open. Tradition or no, I don't want to go back. Even though bbq is in the name of the place.
Had the mixta. Holey moley. Worth all the accolades. One of the best bites of my life. Rich, silky, slightly smokey, beefy goodness. The owner was there and very helpful and friendly. So good. Truly one of a kind and a Texas gem.
I absolutely love this place, fantastic great tasting food had the barbacoa and the large menudo needless to say I waddled out a happy customer. I recommend everyone comes here you'll love it
Best best best barbacoa ever! And the owner Mando is always super friendly with staff providing great customer service. It’s like going to a relatives for breakfast. We’ve tried most everything on the menu, all super delish but cachete entero and lengua by far are the best. See pic of perfect serving. Mouthwatering!
We came on Friday at 11 and they were out of Brisket already for this week. (They open on Thursday). So we decided we would come back next week. BUT this customer came out and said you can brisket anywhere but this is the #1 spot for barbacoa- recieved the James Beard award. He recommended we get the cachete and if we did not like he would pay for it. IT WAS OUTSTANDING. You order by lb. And we got 1/2 lb. This is the only legal underground pit in the US. We had it with the mild salsa - just perfect. Very small place - sign hard to see but all so good
This is the only place that still serves barbacoa en pozo. They have been open since 1955 so they were grandfathered in when the state required all barbacoa to be steamed. Enjoy a great meal and a peace of culinary history at the se time.
enjoy some great babacoa and a bit of Texas history. Vera's Backyard Bar B Que is the only place in Texas that is allowed to cook their barbcoa "en pozo"
