The staff is very friendly and attentive. The restaurant and Dining Room were VERY clean, even the condiments bar and the floors were spotless. Missing one star for the actual flavor of the food. I tried their chopped brisket potato and had a sweet tea for the beverage. The BBQ sauce, alone and in the chopped beef, was way too sweet for Texas BBQ, imo; and the tea wasn't sweet enough. (It's like the sugar out itself in the wrong recipe ?) other than taste being a little off for my TX BBQ (and sweet tea) taste, the place was overall good and a good spot for casual family dining.
It's strange, I ate here once to-go and it was so good. The brisket was amazing the first time... so I ordered it again to-go yesterday... and it was so bad and made me feel gross after eating it for hours. The pork ribs were also not tasty yesterday. So my experience was inconsistent but both times I spent around $40 so that's a lot for a place that isn't always on point.
Don't think being in a shopping mall means you're sacrificing anything. Same great flavor as the original, with a very close location. The 2 meat plate is my go-to meal here. Usually brisket and jalapeno sausage with a couple sides satiates my BBQ craving for a while.
My daughter has Celiac Disease and we are just two weeks from diagnosis and learning how to communicate with the restaurants about it.After saying hello, I let them know that we need to ensure everything is gluten free. They immediately got the staff working the counter to wash hands and pulled out a clean cutting board and knives. They checked on each item to ensure we didn't get anything gluten free.I left there having ordered a lot of extra food and wanting to write a great review. I am writing this after Southside BBQ lunch day 2 and can't wait to have it again for lunch tomorrow.
Food quality was pretty bad this was my first time at this location, I always go to the Elgin location and the Elgin location is a 100 times better than this one. If order ribs and they were still a bit uncooked also I order jalapeño sausage and They gave me that nasty regular sausage. I don’t think I’ll ever come back to this location.
I frequented the original South Side Market in Elgin back in the 1970's when I lived in Austin. This was my first trip to the new Austin location. The food was much like I remembered with the Elgin Hot Guts (sausages) being the highlight for me. The ambiance is not like the original, but they did a pretty good job in trying to duplicate it. I took a bottle of their famed hot sauce back with me for nostalgia's sake.
Went last night for the first time with my husband and we both loved it. The food was hot and outstanding. Everything tasted so wonderful! And the staff made it even better. The young lady at the register Mkaylah was so kind and patient with us. She made sure that we had everything we needed and made us feel welcomed. If every restaurant had someone like her, they would succeed. Me and my husband felt very happy & will be coming back. This is definitely our favorite BBQ spot thanks to the amazing staff and food! Please try the Pork Ribs, my husband wanted to take some home but I told him he needed to save some for the others!
Was very disappointed. Got a bake potato ( it was very brown)been in the steamer for a while, did not eat it. Sausage had no flavor. 4 slices of brisket came to $15.00. not the best quality. Potato salad was the best part. Not the same as it was years ago. I don't mind spending $50+ but I want good quality food. I get needing to raise your prices to compensate for food price increase. But back it up with a quality product.
I am writing this review after visiting this location 4 times. Pre and Post pandemic. This location is a place to go if you have no other options for BBQ. Each time the food was served either lukewarm or cold. The portions are over priced for the amount you receive. They routinely do not have everything on the menu and you are forced to order something else. The staff do not know the difference between baby back and spare ribs and will serve the same ribs regardless of which you order. The taste of the food is also not good. Meat that should be tender is tough to chew. If you are near this location choose a different place to dine.
I stopped by here for an early weekday lunch recently, they had just opened so there was no line. I ordered a sausage slammer (ham wrapped in bacon with cheese and jalapeño inside), some baby back ribs, a brisket sandwich and a side of cole slaw. The sausage slammer was pretty good, not outstanding but well-cooked and the flavor combination was nice. The brisket in the sandwich looked a bit lean, but it was tender and juicy and very good. And the baby back ribs were outstanding, perfectly cooked and came right off the bone. I didn't love the sauce when I first tasted it (it's a bit on the sweet side and more viscous than I like), but I found it paired well with both the brisket and the ribs. The only flat note in the meal was the cole slaw, which was too dry for my taste. Central TX has amazing BBQ options all around, but I was pleasantly surprised by Southside Market and will visit again.
