My wife and I were traveling from Arizona back to Louisiana and needed to spend a night in Abilene, TX. We like both Szechuan and Hunan region Chinese food if it is available, because we like the addition of spiciness that those regions incorporate. We eat a LOT of Asian food. Its our food preference. Let me quickly say that the food was pretty good. Both of our dishes were done well, and quantity was generous. Like many restaurants we have found on this trip the past three months, it appears someone has told most restaurants that $15.00 is the "new normal" for sit- down restaurant food,. Every traditional $12 Chinese dish is now +/- $15. Every traditional $8 lunch is now $10-$11. Inflation. However the food was good so that is most important. . This is a restaurant that clearly has had a strong history. The walls are covered with newspaper clipping extolling the awards and recognition the owner/chef and restaurant have accrued over the years. It appears it has attracted a lot of accolades. However, the facilities have definitely gone past their prime and are in decline. The woodwork and furniture must have been impressive 20 or 30 years ago, but have endured a lot of abuse and little has been done to make the place as fine as it must have been. Sad!! All the waitresses and manager were non-Asian (not a good sign) and the only Asian we saw was probably the now much older Chinese owner/chef seen toiling in the kitchen. Our orders were brought out probably 10-13 minutes apart, which was strange. We generally eat each others dinners (split each dish) so we both ate hers while we awaited mine. Both were good but why the big delay between main course deliveries? Bar was closed and no alcohol (beer) available to order. So, food was good. Service strange. Facilities "Tired" and in need of serious renovation to return this restaurant to its previous Glory. I imagine it was quite nice a long time ago. We'd go back again if we lived locally.
Today was our second trip to Szechuan, while visiting from Lubbock. loved the meal both times. This trip, had hot &sour soup, pot stickers, sweet&sour chicken and Szechuan Beef. All meats were tender and seasoned well. the sauces were right on point.
They were open on Christmas! How nice! Waitresses were very friendly, very attentive, and the service was actually fast even though the place was packed!

Great place to eat! You most definitely won't leave hungry being that the portions are huge and delicious. Anytime we have been here the service is good. Today our Waitress was Nikki. I want to brag on her....she was attentive to all her tables, she was very kind, she had our order correct and out quickly. We never had to look for our Waitress for anything. Nikki made sure we were satisfied with our service and kept our our drinks full without asking. She is awesome! Thanks Nikki for the great service!!!
portions are very big so i usually split with one other person. food is pretty good, but inside is a bit dated and could use a lot of renovations. overall pretty good.
