Hole in the wall established local icon with simply delicious food. Choose your level of spice, and go one lower than you think. Mild is spicy, hot is flaming. Watched two in our party breakout in a sweat but they loved their hot chicken. Into catfish? My fillet was huge and thick. Delicious sides, including locally made chess pie. Word to the wise (learned the hard way)…avoid getting spice on your lips and do not touch your face until you have thoroughly washed your hands.
Authentic old school Nashville Hot, got the mild chicken and catfish and still left the place with my mouth on fire and eyes watering. Highly recommend if you are in the East Nashville area!
If you’re looking for heat, you found it. They use the same blend on all levels of heat and it’s murderous to anyone who doesn’t want the burn. If you order it “light” (not listed) they will lightly sprinkle one side with their mix. Light mild they will sprinkle both sides lightly… and everything beyond that is simply progressively more of the spice. The blend packs a ton of heat, very little flavor. When I went they only had water, they were out of chicken breasts and some sides. I wound up with tenders and enjoyed the “hot” but it was challenging - I’d personally skip the “very hot”. If you’re bringing anyone who doesn’t like heat, skip the heat entirely (don’t do light or light mild) and have them order it non-spicy. Everybody else, enjoy the burn!
I was disappointed the other times I have came food was great but this will be last time going back won't be back
I’ve waited years to try Bolton’s. Finally made it to Nashville 2 weeks ago and went in. The service was bad as many of the employees were rude. Then I wanted to order 1 piece and was told it was going to take 45 minutes for it. I was then met with more rudeness when I canceled my order. I have since sent 2 messages trying to make contact with them but only get their automated response…..
A Nashville institution! Hot chicken is fantastic and HOT—-(PRO Tip—-order 1 heat level down from your usual pick), fries and Mac & cheese both great! Service was quick and very friendly. We sat inside bc it was so hot outside…Be aware no AC only ceiling fans so you are sweating for more than one reason! But the food is so good you won’t care. ?

We were going to go to Hattie B’s while in town but I am SO glad we asked around to see where we could get the best hot chicken and fish while we were in town. This place did not disappoint and is a true gem in Nashville. Beware of the spice levels- even the medium was super spicy. The sides- there are no words. The green beans and baked beans were ridiculous. A MUST if you’re in Nashville. We will likely go back again before we leave town.
I am giving my review a well-deserved 5 stars. Friendly service, deliciously hot food, and a welcoming atmosphere. They also have a parking lot right next to it for convenience… we did get here shortly after they opened so that may have been a contributing factor as to why the parking was easy for us. Also, the building was clean during our visit. I ordered the Catfish (Hot) and it was perfectly spicy for me. My partner got the same heat level and they personally could have went down a notch, so it really depends between each person. There’s something so comforting yet exciting about their food. Great job to everyone involved.Tip: Please know how much spiciness you can handle before ordering. If you can’t handle a lot of spice then there’s no shame in ordering it less spicy. I ordered mine “Hot” and yes it burned but in the best way and I finished every bite! It was delicious!
We were looking for authentic hot chicken, and we found it! After striking out the previous day avoiding crazy lines near Broadway, we tried Bolton's earlier on a Sunday. The staff were friendly and spot on with their recommendations on the heat index. The heat is a dry heat, best we could tell their seasoning seemed to be applied after the chicken was fried. Well worth a stop off the beaten path.
