The food was 5 star. Highly recommend the Ceviche, the Hot Stuff roll and the mushroom gyoza. The service was 2 star.I looked at the menu and website and decided to give it a try at 4pm on a Saturday. When we walked in they immediately told us that ONLY raw items were available until 5 when their kitchen opened. No where was THAT listed. So that was disappointing. The food took a rather long time and even though we were sitting at the bar, they were not attentive to our drinks. It was rather confusing because everyone seemed to be doing everything. Not sure who our waiter was, or the bartender, or even who the hostess was.The food was the only reason I would come back.
Hutch, our bartender on the second floor, made the experience. We started out on the first floor at the bar and could tell the lady’s at the bar were working their butts off but we couldn’t even make a drink order. We ended up going for a table and didn’t see our waiter for 10 minutes. We tried the upstairs bar where we met Hutch. He was awesome and we had a fantastic time. The food was fantastic and came out quick. We are definitely coming back but only for Hutch on the second floor. We will not being staying for the first floor.
This was my first time going to this restaurant. I did like so many individuals read the reviews prior to going for dinner. There were so many reviews that mentioned, how wonderful the food was, yet the service was terrible or bad or downright atrocious.Let me start my review by saying I am not the biggest fan of sushi, but wanted to try something different. I had the only fried option they had, “the Big Hoss” it came out relatively quick, as a matter of fact it came out super fast. As though it was pre cooked. I don’t know that to fact, I’m only saying what happened on my visit.Next I ordered a California roll and Shrimp tempura, neither of which are on the menu that I received. I also ordered a beer. So the waitress took the order and I was expecting what I ordered, but I was told they couldn’t make it. I accepted that response and decided to find something else. The drink order taken at the same time. I had to ask for the first round that seemed as though it wasn’t coming. Then got that beer, finished it and ordered a second beer, just a beer, not a special craft cocktail from some tropical island, it was a simple second beer. It took an hour and three minutes before it arrived.I then stopped the same VERY NICE gentleman that brought the fried roll to ask if I could just get my check and pay for what I ordered or just pay for what I had up to that point. Then miraculously my food and drinks came out…..Look, I’m not on here to bash this establishment, it was a nice place. I just want to say…THE FOOD was good, but the service that I received on my visit was not what I had hoped for. It left a lot to be desired. I don’t want to be negative in any way. I would really appreciate if the management would train employees in the fine quality of servicing guest.I know businesses are short staffed and those that are working are over worked. However, they were covered in all aspects, patio was covered, inside was covered, but all the servers faces revealed a lot of stress. In closing I plan to return in hopes of having a complete experience. This time I’m not setting my bar too high. j just want to have a better experience.
The moment you walk into Salt | Soy, there is an unmistakable vibe. You feel cool just being there. The decor is simple, unassuming even, but still stylish. Once you’re led to your table, you begin scanning the menu you’ve already pored over on your phone all day — each option as enticing as the next. Your server is knowledgeable, but not condescending or pushy. They can patiently answer all of your questions, no matter how inane they might seem to the uninitiated there for the first time. The food…is sublime. The flavors sneakily attack your palate, making you wonder where the next burst of deliciousness will come from. Will it be salt or acid? Sweet or sour? A bit of heat, perhaps? Or just a generous mouthful of umami? Your brain cannot quite comprehend how the food combinations work together so well, which leads to you sitting there with a puzzled expression on your face as you slowly chew and savor the experience. The list of wines and cocktails is plentiful without being intimidating or overwhelming. And the bar itself is a welcoming focal point to gaze upon with its combination of retro lights and gleaming stacks of glassware.
Quiet, relaxed, my kind of place. Each of the staff members I interacted with were personable, pleasant and knowledgeable. That alone is enough to come back for but the unique menu items and terrific experience I had mean it's a guarantee.
Service was wonderful! The seaweed salad was the best I’ve had in Memphis. We also enjoyed the hot stuff roll and the hamachi and avocado sashimi. Very nice happy hour as well.
Great food, with a varied menu. Sets up well for sharing. Upstairs had a nice lounge feel with crafted cocktails.
Very disappointed in our dinner at Salt Soy last night. We have been many times before. The restaurant wasn't busy. Service was slow, and the food wasn't up to par. We ordered 3 rolls, and one was fried. We got the fried roll pretty quickly after ordering. Then we waited 25 minutes for our other two rolls! The server didn't even apologize when we asked about it or when she finally brought them to us. No apology, no comp, no discount! $142 tab. Needless to say we won't be back any time soon. Salt Soy is hit or miss.
We will definitely be back! We took 6 our staff here for dinner and everyone absolutely loved everything. There was nothing left on any of the plates! See ya soonOunce Of Hope
First time coming here and I'm sure this is my favorite place for Asian food in the city now. Highly recommend if you want to have a great meal!
