I was traveling through Memphis and had a few days to stop over so I was definitely interested in finding what may be considered as excellent Memphis food. Without having any real point of reference I did a quick Food Network search and Gus’s world famous fried chicken was on their recommended list. Remember, I had no idea what I was walking into and I had no idea what to expect because fried chicken has very subjective judging range.
The best fried chicken i have ever had in my life….
Lemonade, chicken, honey mustard. All slaps. The beans and coleslaw are pretty basic but still recommend. The Mac n cheese was okay, tastes like it’s from a box at the store. Would still recommend. Temperature of food was on 1000 but still the chicken was perfect and moist. Fast friendly service with a good atmosphere. Very clean establishment. 12/10.
Oh dear - we were disappointed. I had read all these rave reviews but this was not what I was expecting. The staff were lovely and helpful but I did not expect to eat on plastic, divided plates like a kids' party! I found the chicken too heavy and fatty and really couldn't eat it. Also don't advertise beer on the menu and have limited selection. Again not the fault of the staff. This actually made the likes of KFC and MacDonalds look like haute cuisine.
We had a great time in Memphis but, we wish we could have spent more time on Beal Street. The fried chicken was good.

Chicken was golden and crispy. Service was great and fast. Nice day to sit outside. Okra and Collards were on point. .must do!!
The chicken is hot, crispy, seasoned-well, and HOT. The sides…eh. Just go for the chicken. Friendly and professional staff. This is a very popular place so plan to wait or get there when you’re not starving. Wouldn’t suggest big parties attend because of the size but great for 2-4 people. Sidenote: they use a cool app to notify you when your table is close to being ready. We were able to walk around the neighborhood until our table was ready.
Fabulous authentic place, super friendly and helpful staff and last but not least best fried chicken I ever tasted, also very affordable, must go when in Memphis
Great flavor plenty of food good value fun environment we had a to go order and they forgot we were there waiting after asking if they forgot us they found our order.
