We weren't quite sure what to expect here but it was great. The portions we're good for the price and the quality was great. The staff was really nice and helpful with our needs. My only suggestion would be to get more than 1 type of BBQ sauce going. It has an acquired taste that not everyone likes. I think that's why most places with BBQ have a variety. The restaurant has a great view of the Tennessee River from inside. There is also an outside dining option but as did not sit there since we were told it had a "limited" menu.Overall a great experience.
We went to Calhoun’s for lunch after doing a river cleanup. We ate on the deck, which sits on top of the river. Our drinks came in plastic cups with plastic straws. The food came on plastic trays with plastic sauce cups, plastic forks, plastic spoons, plastic knives, plastic utensil wrapper. They have 10 ft fans to help blow all of this plastic off the tables into the river. They profit greatly from the beauty of the river, and they don’t care one bit about keeping it beautiful. Plastic in our water is a serious problem. Hire a dishwasher!
In town for a softball camp and I found this place on TripAdvisor and thought it would be good to try and it was also recommended to my daughter by one of the girls at the camp with her. The inside dining room had a great view of the river! We had about a 30 minute wait for a table ( which I was understand of), but it took over an hour to get our food once our order was placed. Our waiter was very slow and not very attentive to refills. I ordered the hickory smoked 1/2 chicken and baked potato. There was nothing smoked about this chicken. The outside skin was herb seasoned but under the skin the chicken was very yellow and tasted like it was coated in granulated chicken bouillon. It was edible but was not definitely not what I expected. I wish I had taken pics! My daughter got the Calhoun trio which came with chicken tenders, ribs and pulled pork. The breading of the tenders were mushy but the ribs and pork were good. She gave me her cole slaw which turned out to be the best part of what I ate in this restaurant. Never did get the bread that should have been a part of the meals. We were going to get dessert but based on the slow service and lack of food quality it was a hard pass. Asked for check and box for my daughter’s leftovers. As I’m helping her box it up the waiter startled me by shoving a handheld card reader in my face and not saying anything. I guess he seen my confusion and said “it’s for the tip”. Not impressed with my meal and definitely not impressed with service. It’s a shame the location is really the best part of this restaurant.
We chose this place since the location was close to our hotel, and it was our first time visiting Knoxville...What a wonderful restaurant. We were seated indoors, with a beautiful view of the river. The food was excellent! I had the Ale Pork chop that was delicious....My husband had the BarB Que Pork Plate, and the sauce was so good, we purchased a bottle to take home!! We shared the Spinach Artichoke appetizer with thin crisp tortilla chips that was fabulous. The house salad was huge and very good. We had a very nice young server named Kate. She was very friendly, with typical "Southern Hospitality" and did a great job, with the restaurant very busy that evening. All in all, our experience was wonderful, and we are so happy we had dinner at such a memorable place in beautiful Knoxville! We hope to visit again someday!
I always like to throw out the disclaimer that I don’t like barbecue much. This is why I get other food when I go to a barbecue place. I got fish and chips and some spinach artichoke dip.The spinach and cheese dip was fine but man. Those chips. Help me. They were covered in grease and half of them were kind of rubbery and gross. Please don’t even bother serving those to people!Fortunately our server brought us some new chips (he said they were “from the inside”… so ask for chips from the inside if yours are bobo when you are sitting outside). The new ones were actually crispy and crunchy like a chip should be.My fish and chips were good, I feel like it’s hard to mess up fish and chips.Personally I would probably give them a 3 since one of our friends with us got nachos and the chips were the same sad “outside” chips instead of crispy, crunchy “inside” chips but my husband is a big fan so taking that and the service/ambiance into account (live band playing right by us, awesome view of the river), I bumped them up to a 3.5, this rounding up to the 4 stars as you can see here.
Stoped in for a drink an stayed for lunch. Friendly, quick service with a smile. A must for football weekends or anytime while in the area.
We visited there in December, just before Christmas. Our first time in a Calhoun's and wasn't quite sure what to expect. As with any place in the downtown Knoxville area parking can be a headache but it was manageable. It was dark but the lights reflecting off of the river made the evening memorable. The staff was very nice and pleasant. Our waitress had a great sense of humor and it was nice to chat with her. The food is very good and service matches it. Well worth the traffic and the parking hassles to visit. Looking forward to getting there with warm weather and sitting on the deck.
We devoured the slow cooked pork nachos. It’s a huge portion and every bite was delicious. The view on the deck was wonderful. To top it all off we had a husband and wife team as our servers, JD and LA. Sit at one of their tables if you can. Excellent service with a smile. We’ll definitely be back.
It was a Saturday night and a 45 minute wait and the food was worth it. We ordered and the food came out quicker then we expected. Victoria was an amazing waitress and recommended we try the Prime rib on a future visit. Next time we travel to Knoxville, we will eat here again.
This was a pleasant place to visit while family was in town. The wet wings are definitely a must have! I indulged in the “summer lemonade”, DELICIOUS! Both the ‘Sweet & Spicy’ wet wings in the thunder road sauce and the summer lemonade are for sure my “go to” options.Be mindful that there is a separate menu for outdoor seating. Although it is smaller, the deck menu, was still sufficient in my opinion.
