Does not live up to the hype. There’s so much great BBQ in South Carolina….and this misses the mark so bad. The sandwich was just ok. I didn’t like the hash at all. I was excited for the corn dodgers…but they were mediocre. Nothing special about them.
I ordered 2 bbq sandwiches and a large potato salad. The sandwich was really good. The lemonade was pretty good as well. But that potato salad was a no for me.

Excellent BBQ as well as Hash&Rice. The ladies were super sweet and helpful. For "connoisseurs", the sauce is a delightfully tangy tomato/vinegar blend. I had the small plate, my husband some sandwiches. Portions were generous and filling. The Alice Dr location is open Wed thru Sunday. Others are open over the weekend. They do take credit/debit cards, at least at this location. Read about Ward's in The State paper of Columbia. 1st Place Winner with over 20000 votes as best BBQ of the Midlands. Runner up won 17000+ votes. The reason I mark it a 4 is NOT why you go to a BBQ place. But the slaw and potato salad were not up to par. To be honest, I've never been a fan of slaw, and grew up on German style potato salad. I thought both were quite bland, and the dressing very soupy. My husband, after we got home and had some from the tubs we bought, agreed. (Slaw fan). I'd definitely go back for BBQ and hash&rice. Yum!
Been coming here since I was a kid. I don't often make it back to good ol Sumter, but when I do I MAKE SURE to stop by Wards to get a taste of home.
I grew up on Ward's BBQ, it's a must whenever I'm home for a visit. Sooo goood!
The young lady was very nice, polite and attractive. I came in for three dozen corn dodgers and the young lady was kind enough to cook me up some fresh ones since they only had about a half a dozen in the ready to go container. It took no more than 5 to 10 minutes to cook up a new supply. She even told me the approximation of time that it would take in advance. When I returned, she was bagging up my order. She was also very accommodating to my request of a dozen in each of three bags. Good job on the customer service, I appreciate it!!Mike?
The restaurant was short staffed, but the young lady was hustling as fast she could go. Very nice and cheerful. Her great attitude made the wait fly by.Thank you
Best hash and rice I've ever had. Ward's BBQ sauce recipe is awesome. Staff is extremely friendly but don't dawdle when serving you. Would gladly eat here 3 days a week.
Wards has and Rice takes me back to my childhood visits to Sumter in the 80s! Great to see a family owned small business still rocking and delivering scrumpdelilicious grub!!!
