The food and portions were awesome. We drove by before and were curious glad we stopped in. Wasn't busy when we went on a Wednesday at lunch. Nice that they offer outdoor seating in an amazing southern porch setting. The interior is an industrial look to it but still rather cozy. The chicken was very juicy and perfectly seasoned as was the fried porkchop and collards. Mashed potatoes with white gravy was perfect!
Place was packed for mothers day. We had reservations and were seated when our entire party arrived. We were seated in a booth that handled 5 and was greated by Sara with a joke and a smile. Chicken is their thing and we all had some variation. The fried chicken was great, large pieces that you don't see anymore that came with fries and slaw. The chicken and waffles were strips and the waffles were light and fluffy. Their signature drinks were something special; the one pictured was Kettle Vodka and lemonade with smashed blueberries , outstanding. All in all a nice place with a great staff.
This is hard to write because I’d previously had a great experience at the downtown location. Our experience was like visiting a mediocre diner. On a positive note, the service was friendly and inviting. They were out of fried chicken on a Sunday. My husband opted for shrimp and grits which were pretty good overall. I had the burger but it was like a good fast food burger at best. The sidewinder fries seemed a bit juvenile for the establishment but to each their own. What was most disappointing were the side dishes. We had hoppin’ Johns which was clearly from a can. The macaroni and cheese was an embarrassment. No real cheese, not a sprinkle of seasoning. Kraft instant mac and cheese would have been better, just remove it from the menu. All of the food was luke warm, even the lettuce and pimento cheese bites. Nothing was fresh or authentic. I may consider returning to the downtown location but the Nexton location was disappointing.
The service was really good, and we didn't wait long at all. Our appetizer (fried green tomatoes) as well as our full plates came out in what we deemed to be great timing. The tomatoes are accompanied w/ a pimento, and they were delicious. I enjoyed the shrimp and grits that I ordered, but do feel they could cut down on the amount of onions that topped the dish. The portion was a little excessive. My grits were smooth and creamy. The shrimp nice and plump. I wasn't too keen on the sausage though. The plate portion sizes were just right. Especially for the price point. I did order a Dragoon rum punch that ended up being watery so that was a bummer. Party wise, we all agree that the food was good enough for a future visit.
I booked this event expressly for the purpose of having a dinner with several friends without the hassle of ordering separately, food arriving at different times and the hassle of paying 12 separate bills at the end of the evening. So, I was willing to pay for the service that accompanied a family style dinner. None of the 12 of us had ever has this experience at Poogan's or elsewhere. We were all very excited. We were booked from 6:00 PM-8PM. However it was 45 mins after the last guest arrived before we received bread (7:15). We were served salads on 4 in saucers, so half the party didn't bother to eat more than the two bites that fit on the plates. At 8:00PM were get three platters of meat, one bowl of mashed potatoes and one bowl of mashed potatoes for 12 people. So, I immediately told the server wer needed refills on two meats and she said she'd have to talk to her manager. By 8:30PM it is communicated to me that the server was unaware that our meal included refills on everything. (The booked expressly stated that guests were free to eat as much as they liked) At this point everyone is still hungry and we were ready to go home. I ordered two dessert choices. After the first one arrives- not family style, this time on individual plates- I ask when will the second dessert will arrive. The server again states, I'll ask my manager. DID ANTONE READ MY BOOKED RESERVATION. WHAT DID I PAY $40.00/person = $753.00 for???????? Everyone left frustrated and hungry two couples went to get something to eat after they left!!!!! I am so disappointed and embarrassed. While the server was professional, I never saw the manager ALL night long. No one came to apologize for how long everything took, that we were not served correctly or even to help our server. This was my first ever experience eating at Poogan's, as it was for two other members of the party and I can say with confidence that no one who dined with us will ever again try or recommend family style dining to anyone. It was a miserable and regrettable experience. I could have fed twice as many people at any other restaurant for the same price- the difference would have been that we ALL would have enjoyed ourselves AND had enough to eat. DO NOT book family style dining at this location.
I was disappointed after all of the recommendations and lists on which it appeared. My steak was overcooked, the broccolini was bland, and the mashed potatoes had way too much sour cream. They were sour. The service and view were good. It was way overpriced though, I won't go back.
Very cold. Told they had to keep fans on high and AC low because of Covid?! No worker wore a mask. Soup as could as the room. Kept asking if we wanted more beers (still NO). Finally took order. Wife nicely asked if the soup could be warmed up…..”Oh, is it cold?” Charged us for both bowls. Too many good restaurants in the area Don’t waste your time or money
My wife and I had an early lunch and it was increíble. I had the fried chicken and waffles and was blown away. I’m not usually a fried chicken fan, but the chicken was delicious. My wife had the dog bowl (hilariously named) and she said it was excellent. Service was great too! Cool atmosphere and really nice visit.
Poogan’s Kitchen is great. Every time we go I try something new. But the thing that remains constant are the fried green tomatoes! AWESOME every time. The pimento bacon jam that comes with the tomatoes is crazy good! In a recent visit I had the Chicken Fried Pork Chops with whipped Mash potatoes and pearl onions. Pearl Onions….? Yes, these onions are the size of a M&M and are great with the dish. Our last visit we got the Pretzel Poppers, GET THEM! They come with a pimento cheese fondue and honey-beer mustard! My wife tried tried the honey-beer mustard and she surprisingly liked it a lot. In the same visit I got the 4-piece Fried Chicken, which is half of a chicken and a lot, especially after the pretzel popper appetizer. Looking forward to my next visit to try something new.
Poogan's Southern Kitchen at Nexton Square in Summerville is a great place to go for delicious food in a relaxed atmosphere. I really like their entire menu and how well everything is prepared. The staff here is very friendly and accommodating to make sure that you get everything you need.
