Good corned beef Rueben. If I could eat fried food would definitely have ordered the fish and chips. It looked great at the table next to me.
I’m stunned this place has such a high rating. When you walk in no one greets you or seats you. The empty tables have not been cleaned. It’s awkward to know what to do. We eventually sat at the least cluttered table. The wood chairs are very uncomfortable and sticky. The table is sticky too. When someone finally came over to wait on us I asked if they could clean off the table and later when he came back with a rag he only wiped about 1/3 of the table and pushed food right into my lap. I ordered hand breaded chicken tenders. They weren’t tender and they were clearly cooked in old grease. I love bland food, and these were so bland they tasted as it they had no seasoning whatsoever. The whole place felt sticky and dirty - could not wait to get out of there.
We stopped by the Griffon for a quick lunch. It is not a terribly big place, and the interior is reminiscent of some older bars from my youth, but it has its own quirky charm. Half of the customers appeared to be locals and the servers were very familiar and chatty with them. However they were equally attentive to tourists like ourselves. We ordered fish & chips and a classic BLT. The fish was fine, but the BLT missed the mark a bit in the proportion of ingredients and freshness of the bread. The drinks and bar service were good. Not a bad place for a quick drink and lunch.
Awesome food, service and atmosphere. We had shrimp which were clearly hand breaded and super fresh. Some of the most reasonable prices I found in the city and large portions!
The Griffon was great! We stopped here for lunch while in Charleston and it did not disappoint. The place reminds me of No Name Pub in Key West, a fantastic little dive shack. The service was excellent, the food was great and the place had a great feel to it. We'll go back here whenever we're in Charleston.
Stopped in for a quick lunch with the family on a Friday and we loved the place! Our two young boys (8 and 11) were in awe of all the "money" on the walls, they also loved the food. It was fun being able to sign and decorate a dollar and staple it to the wall before we left, the kids loved it. The staff was incredibly friendly, we had at least 3 different people check on our table during our visit to make sure we were doing OK, that rarely happens elsewhere. The prices were very reasonable and the food was outstanding. The place is a little on the small side and while it was busy, we did not have to wait for a table, we walked right in and were seated quickly. Ultimately this place was an all around good time and I would highly recommend it!
What a kick! Every inch of the walls and ceiling are covered with dollar bills. We were in Charleston for only 4 days, yet went to Griffon twice. Great atmosphere!
Tiny hole in the wall with the best fish and chips!! It is first come first served. Full bar. Bring your dollar to sign and hang in the restaurant!
We stopped by for a drink and possibly food. The waitress (older blonde) seemed a bit impatient with me, as I was trying to decide what to drink. We watched the food coming out of the kitchen, and it seemed like greasy pub food, so we finished our beer and proceeded back to our favorite Irish bar in town, Bumpa’s.
We stopped by the Griffon after a two hour walking tour of Charleston. We were tired of walking and were lucky enough to snag a place at the bar. The couple on one side of us was from Pennsylvania and on the other side the couple was from New York. Lots of tourists which isn't unusual this time of year. The only reason I gave them a rating of 4 instead of 5 was the length of time it took us to get a drink. At first I thought it was just us, but the couples on both sides of us also had a problem catching the bartenders attention too. Having said that, once we had been served once, the service improved. My wife and I both ordered the fish and chips and they were wonderful. The couple from New York ordered chicken strips and they got a large portion which they said was delicious. I would definitely recommend the food, and if we do get back there, we will certainly stop by the Griffon again.
