This place was great! The ribs were tender, the greens were seasoned perfectly, baked beans had just enough tang, and the portions were worth the price!
Was recommended by a local and was guided right! Fantastic food, very friendly staff. I came fir the south Carolinian mustard based BBQ which was fall apart yo a plastic fork tender, but other sauce options are available. Will return.
My husband and I had brisket sandwich it was amazing. Melt in your mouth. He and I both got a sandwich, fries and one onion ring. Then order of hush puppies. Yes it was 53.00 but worth it the portions were huge. I took half my sandwich with me. Ate it next morning and it was still tender melting in your mouth.
I’ve tried just about every BBQ restaurant in Charleston, and (if you are a fan of SC mustard sauce/Melvin’s secret sauce), nothing compares to Melvin’s pulled pork sandwich. The pork is cooked absolutely perfect and the “Big Joe” sandwich, while expensive, contains a hearty amount of meat that will leave you quite satisfied. Only reason for not leaving 5 stars is that the sides are good, but not “great” for the hefty prices they charge. Because of that, I usually just order a single “Big Joe” with no sides, but it’s so darn good that it keeps me coming back.
Great food but get there early they will sell out of high demand stuff like ribs and hash. Loved the food and service was awesome as well.
I have been coming here since I was a kid with my dad and grandpa. They have the best bacon cheeseburger around with amazing steak fries and an onion ring the size of your head. BBQ is good too, but I almost exclusively go for the burger.
Coming from the North, and completely understanding and disliking Carolina BBQ (Vinegar), I opted for a burger and fries. Excellent burger served with well done steak fries. Wonderful lunch!
So good! So so good!! Love their pulled pork sandwich ( as you can see). Big portions! Had a sweet tea and that’s not a donut but an actual onion ring! Huge! Such good food. Paper bags for doggy bags and hours later ate the rest of the sandwich- still mouth watering deliciousness.Also- bathrooms are clean and you’ll find management (or owners?) helping out as well. Another place to recommend!
Have eaten BBQ all over the US and this is by far the best! There is no comparison and I always stop here anytime I am in the area. Please expand to the rest of the US to show us why Charleston, SC BBQ is the best!!
We are familiar with South Carolina BBQ, and Melvin's still has some of it. People should note that brisket is not a native South Carolina food, no one ever ate brisket in South Carolina until food shows started showcasing it, and out-of-towners started demanding it. So, we went for the traditional SC foods; pulled pork, hash, and collard greens. The pork was very good, except that it was drowning in gold sauce (which I love, just not that much). I solved this by ordering mine "dry" on the second visit, and saucing it myself. The hash was good, and the serving was large. The collard greens were delicious. The SC-style big fat onion rings looked good, but had been lying under a poorly-working heat lamp for a while. Disappointing. Prices are high, but that looks like the way it's going to be until we get out of our roaring-twenties mindset.
