Great people and service! A little confusing when it comes to online reservation. We were asked if we made reservations for Big John’s or Speakeasy.. No clue ?. Thank you for a fun night! ?

We were very excited to try out this tavern. We came in with a bachelorette group of 15 and the main bartender decided after giving everybody one drink and taking our food order that he was going to cut us off. Some of us weren't drinking at all. They would not give us a reason. So we decided to cancel our orders and leave. We left very disappointed and were treated very poorly by the staff. I would definitely not recommend this place if you want good customer service. They are lacking it indefinitely. We paid our tab and still tipped after being treated so badly. There are so many better places to try in Charleston. Would NEVER recommend going to Big John's Tavern.

Great atmosphere. Went on a Saturday, early afternoon, with group ranging from 15-47 years of age. Food was great. Had the Smash burger, Shaved steak sandwich, chicken fingers plate, grilled cheese sandwich, braided Bavarian pretzel bread with the best honey butter ever made. When one of our diners longed for a latte, an employee confessed to knowing how to make on, and it was the best she had ever had.

Just stumbled upon Big John's. It was a great atmosphere. The bartenders were super friendly and made you feel like hanging there all day. Food was really good.

Traveling...Charleston first timer badly in need of a beer and an etc...fantastic find on foot from the Hilton Liberty. Deviled eggs were perfect, local draft, Casamigos tequila. Thank you Mr. Connolly. Clean and authentic spot in its own place.

Really cool bar/restaurant/speakeasy. The cocktails are well thought out and well executed. Staff is attentive and friendly. The food is where we were blown away. The clothesline bacon is a must. Every part of the dish is excellent down to the pickled veggies and shrimp. The atmosphere pulls everything together is a way that makes the entire experience outstanding.

Big John's Tavern on East Bay Street in Charleston is a great place to go for drinks and delicious food in a cool and relaxed atmosphere. I really like the location and how consistent they are as a place to go. The staff here is very friendly and accommodating to make sure that you have a good experience.

cool bar, great cocktails and really great mgt

The overview on Google for this place is that it is a “longtime dive” and rated as a “$” for price points. This is completely misleading. This is not a dive bar and not cheap. A craft beer at minimum is $8. Domestic bottles were $5. The cushioned bar seats are certainly not something found in a dive bar but good to sit in. The music was good. Our order was never put in and when we inquired 40 minutes later (at least) it was finally put in. Menu was limited. Three slices of fried green tomato is $9. That was one of the cheaper items on the menu. We were never checked on (and we were at the bar) and never offered additional drinks. Of all the places in Charleston that we hit over 5 days, this was the most unfriendly. Gave it 2 stars for music and taste. Lack of service and southern hospitality were big negatives.

Nice experience and big change from the old days. Interesting menu and great libations.
