Everything we had was exceptional. Instead of the appetizers list we wanted a side of the brussel sprouts to start, which turned it to be a great opener. The mahi tuna, cooked to taste & spinach salad.A well decorated bathroom always amuses me and I liked the art in this one ???
Had a tomahawk pork chop. Tasted like half a box of salt was applied as a rub. Terrible. Even though my wife and I were the only ones in a section of the restaurant, the waitress and 2 bus boys stood 2 feet from our table and had loud discussions, as if we weren't even seated in the booth next to them. We will not return.
Really enjoyed a business dinner here. The menu is largely meat-focused but there were enough fish and veggie options. My mushroom gnocchi was delicious. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff; overall a very good experience.
We had dinner on the 2nd floor porch; very nice in spring but sunlight was somewhat bothersome as it set. Food and mixed drinks were excellent! I found the bolognaise a little different (but still good) - curly tube pasta and large pieces of stewed tomatoes. Scallops and shrimp were good; as was the fillet.
We had a great time at the Tavern. Tall task to entertain the palates from college grads to grandma and grandpa and everyone in between but they nailed it. Private section for the 11 of us, parking 1/2 block away, and everything was excellent. Book early!
The remodel is very nice, a refresh of space, usage and ambiance. Much better bathroom! Unfortunately the food did not live up to the remodel. The one shrimp appetizer was good, but 3 colossal shrimp for $18? The plating wss messy and unattractive. The lamb loin plate was really all brown. The lamb ($40) was fine, the fingerling potatoes nothing special and the Brussels sprouts weren't roasted enough as many were still hard. The veal Milanese ($30) was too dry and came with a meager arugula salad, no sides. So haricots verts ($7)were ordered, which were not at al dente yet and not great. Overall the price vs quality is out of whack, most entrees are $30+ with no sides, which are $7-8. Our bill for 2 , 2 glasses of wine, 1 app, 2 dinners, 1 coffee was $138 plus tip. While I don't mind spending that , I do expect the meal to be outstanding and this was far from that. I may give the Tavern another try in the future but not if I'm paying! I can get a much better meal at Gigis or the Ale House.
We love the new Upstairs at the Tavern. This is a newly renovated second floor of the Tavern. They have a bar, a porch with dining and two fire pits. The fire pit areas are self serve. The tables on the porch and inside have servers. The bar has about 12 seats. The entire upstairs in nicely decorated with PSU football photographs. Our favorite bartender, Bob, provided great service with his wonderful smile and sense of humor. The entire Tavern has been remodeled and re-decorated. And it looks great. Enjoy the upstairs bar area. Unfortunately, no advance reservations here. First come first serve only. Stop in and say hello to Bob!!! Enjoy. We are…Penn State!
Visited here recently for the first time since I graduated (long ago). The place has just recently reopened after a lengthy remodeling, and it was well worth the wait. Warm and cozy, while beautifully decorated throughout, I highly recommend a visit. Despite being completely filled, service was above average and we didn't wait long for our meals. Six of us enjoyed five different entrees, and all were delicious. If you can secure a reservation, request the front window table to make it a bona fide State College experience. Just great.
We were there for a Thursday night. Service was pretty good although the server didn't know what the Tavern sauce was. My daughter got the Bolognese - she didn't really like it. She said it was dry. The prime rib was very good. My wife got the Wagyu burger experience and was very happy. She subbed out the fries for mashed potatoes, which were yummy.
Best food I have had in a long time. It is a very down to earth atmosphere with friendly staff and amazing food. I got the tavern wagyu burger and my wife got the shaved prime rib sandwich. Both where cooked to absolute perfection. We also both got a bowl of the Beef and Barley soup which was to die for!!! We will more than likely be back.
