Good hefeweizen and dunkel biers. The bratwurst was excellent, but, the schnitzel was awful; it should NOT be deep fried in old oil. The spaetzel was passable and the bier cheese mixed with it just ok.After we were seated, the restaurant was not busy at all, but, it took about 15 minutes before the LONE waitress - oh, management, what were you thinking! - acknowledged our presence, even though she was at the table right behind us. Our order took about 20 minutes to get to our table - I'm glad we placed our food order along with the bier. This place was packed with a mix of regulars and a couple of tour groups when we left, so I really felt lucky that we weren't in the group of about 8 that was walking in.

Killer brews, phenomenal food, stellar service, old german town atmosphere... what more could you ask for. Absolutely love this place

I think there may be new management since I was there 4+ years ago, but the essence of this place is the same...good food, good beer, and good atmosphere. For appetizers we had the pretzels(very good) and the poutine( not as good as we remember...fries slightly under done and unsalted, and a gravy that seemed less demi-glaze and more packaged Brown gravy.). Dinners were cod sandwich(great pretzel crust and enormous), mushroom ravioli( to die for as a mushroom.lover), sausage platter( huge and delicious if you want a true German experience) and pork schnitzel (disappointing and it's taste was simply "fried"). Dessert was out of your mind delicious. Honestly, this place just reinforces how good a food city Pittsburgh is....no one thinks of Penn Brewery as a food locale, but it ranks up there with all good local eateries. Try it...you won't be disappointed. Jill

Not my favorite brewery to go to but it was enjoyable. No offense but I can barely remember what I had to eat/drink. The staff was great.

Not good at all. Went there yesterday for my birthday dinner and were out of everything. Gave us paper menus that had spilled drinks stains and dried crusted food on them. Did not have au jus sauce, but was told I could have gravy, which the server did not return with but was tired of asking for it. Sandwhich was bland, cole slaw was bland as well, ribs were chewy not “fall off the bone” and were warm at best. Did not have the French dip and despite the menus saying “cocktails”, did not have any mixed drinks whatsoever. Also, asked for cider which they were ALSO out of. Despite there being 2-3 people at the bar, asked 2-3 times to have the TVs changed to the hockey game or pirates game which was refused due to “people watching it” but no one was….very VERY loud party in the building I couldn’t hear myself think but to one thought to say anything. Will not be returning. You would’ve been better off with a simple pb&j at home.

I highly recommend you DO NOT choose Penn Brewery as your wedding reception venue. The only thing I can compliment is the food. The food was great, so maybe get them catered, if anything.Their event staff is completely incompetent. If it weren’t for my brother and friend, we wouldn’t have had music. The event “planner” didn’t know how to work the sound system. She admitted this months before the event, but never learned how to use it, which I trusted her to do. I was told I could pay the bill prior to the reception, as we did drink tickets, not an open bar. So, there was nothing that needed to be billed after the event. I asked several times for the bill, and it wasn’t provided due to “a delay with management.” I figured they would invoice me. Instead, the event planner had me, the bride, in tears at the end of my reception because my bank wouldn’t approve a $4,000 expense at midnight.I was told the staff handling food would wear masks; they did not. All around unprofessional and I’ll never go back.

Food is always good, and obviously beer too. Janelle the waitress was great. She was working the entire dining room and didn't miss a beat.

After a three day fast I was excited to enjoy all of my favorite German foods at Penn Brewery's main location last night. I also had my besty flew in from Texas. The food was outstanding. Schnitzel, German potato salad, and red cabbage were my delights. Done to perfection. Enjoyed with a Penn Dark. Great beer!My disappointment began when I was shortly told, "my kitchen is closed" at 8:30pm without prior warning. I was super excited to round out the meal with Apple Strudel Bites, but alas the kitchen was closed. Maybe next time the kitchen will be open until 10pm like the web site advertises.

Hadn't been back to the Penn Brewery since pre covid. Glad we decided to grab lunch before the holidays and forgot how excellent their St Nick's Bock seasonal is from the tap!
