I've been wanting to try Puerto Rican cuisine for a while now, and there aren't too many options in Pittsburgh. When I saw Flavor of Puerto Rico was offering a $6 discount on an online ordering app, I was definitely interested. Tonight, I ordered the baked chicken sandwich, sweet plantains (maduros), a beef and cheese empanada, as well as a slice of tres leches.It was a lovely meal at a great price. The sandwich was simple, but very good. Their chicken is roasted perfectly, and incredibly tender. They give you a pretty good portion for the price, too. Pan de agua, or water bread, is homemade and soaks up the chicken juices. It's great! There's also a bit of cheese in this sandwich, which was a nice touch.This was my first time trying maduros, so I wasn't too sure what to expect other than a sweet flavor. These were definitely sweet, and they are generous with their side portions. Maduros are caramelized on the outside and quite soft on the inside. I'm not the biggest fan of maduros now that I know their flavor, but these were clearly expertly made and still worth trying.The empanadas (or pastellitos) are an absolute must try when you visit this place. I got the beef and cheese, which was sooo good! The ground beef is juicy and flavorful, while the crust is light and crunchy. I didn't find any cheese in this empanada, though.I was a fan of their tres leches. It was very well soaked and creamy. It's topped with a nice coating and a dusting of cinnamon (the cinnamon flavor is not very prominent). The dessert is not too heavy, either. I do wish the portion was a little bigger.All in all, this is a hidden gem in Mount Oliver. There are only a few Puerto Rican places in Pittsburgh, and this surely excellent food which seems quite authentic! Now they have a more consistent menu, too, instead of just daily specials. Definitely worth a try for anyone who's curious about Puerto Rican cuisine.
Its always a good sign when the rice is cooked perfectly as it always is here. Delicious meals, vegan options, and the holiness that is fried plantains keep us coming back! Very affordable too.
I definitely found one of my new favorite spots to eat. The food was hot and fresh. I love that it felt more like getting a home cooked meal instead of “fast food”. I loved the pork and rice. The pork was cooked just right! The beef and chicken empanadas were the best I’ve had in the Pittsburgh area. Everything was seasoned perfectly and flavorful. The tres leche cake was delicious. I definitely over ate. Lol!! But it was worth it. Also, the prices are great!! Affordable and great portion sizes.
This place is a hidden gem. Service was very attentive, They even helped me decide in a meal. I like to mix my food together so it looked like slop, so I didn't get any pictures. The food was so good that I could not even believe that I was eating it. The chicken empananas are amazing! Decent pricing and there was so much food, I couldn't even eat at all! I highly recommend this place!!
Ordered takeout and was very impressed. Empanadas were delicious. the Pernil and tilapia with shrimp sauce very good. And if you've never had tres leche cake, you have to try it. The prices are remarkably low for the quality of the food. Definitely ordering again.
I am thrilled that we have Flavor of Puerto Rico in the neighborhood. It's very affordable, which is great. My favorite so far are the vegan empanadas and the rice with red beans. (I'm not vegetarian, but I love beans, and these are good ones.) The empanadas hold and reheat well for lunch the next day so I always grab an extra.The pernil was great, and the sancocho was amazing. I had it plain (no fideos or rice) and will definitely be ordering it again. The pan de agua (bread) is SO soft and perfect if you like fresh, fluffy bread. And you can get tres leches cake with your meal because it's inexpensive and so good and cinnamon-y. Oh! The chicken pinchos are super good, too.I have not had a chance to go meet the owners in person yet but on the phone and FB they have been really nice. They do online ordering for pickup as well as delivery through the delivery services.
I had the roast pork, empanadas (beef and caramel apple), ham and cheese melt, and fried plantains! Everything was excellent and packaged well! Recommended!
