Monks is another gem in Philadelphia. Everyone knows their selection of amazing beer, but not everyone knows they're incredible food. Mussels, handmade chicken tenders, duck liver mouse, duck salad and frog legs. Tom and his team are incredibly inviting, wonderful service and an atmosphere that makes you feel comfortable and at home
Not only does Monk's Cafe boast a comprehensive connoisseur's list of heady brews, but the food and atmosphere made this a special night out.
What a great small tavern to visit. Nice staff, really solid menu and great beer collection. I asked someone for a really good Philly Locals spot and this is what they recommended! Wasn’t disappointed!
The ambience of this place is amazing! It's a trip outside of time. Hardwood everywhere, a maze of rooms with tables and bars, dark moody lighting. The food is excellent Belgian-inspired, sort of like very high end bar food. I had the Monk's burger (caramelized leeks and Bleu cheese - and literally this is all that comes on the burger, a welcomingly simple and great burger), fries, and I samples the blueberry lemon tart and the pecan tart. The pecan tart is ????.
I don’t usually eat potatoes, but if I’m going to cheat, Monk’s frites are the way to do it. Amazing spicy mayo, duck or steak salad, of course mussels, and I’m not a beer guy, but my friends are and they swear by the selection. Don’t miss it!
The Zinnebir (beer) I had was very good, but when you're charged $8, expecting a pint (instead of 10 ounces), is reasonable. The place was very busy on a Saturday night in late April, but the staff did find us a table quickly, and the waiter took our order in a few minutes. We then waited 35 minutes for our dinner. We each had the chicken breast sandwich, served with matchstick fries. The sandwiches were good, but nothing special. The fries were on the spicy side. Overall, just an ok meal.
Amazing beer selection from across the world, with a focus on local craft and traditional Belgian breweries. The food is world class as well, with Belgian moules et frites, as well as local fare.
The mussels (not pictured) were very good! The duck salad sandwich was incredible. If you get the chicken burger ask for some sauce — needed a little extra zing! The staff is friendly and the environment is welcoming!
Monk's offers Belgian and European fare with a great beer list. The lively bar and the compact dining room offer great people watching and delicious comfort food.
I had the duck salad and a refreshing Belgium beer. It was a perfect early evening dinner, as I was dining alone. The bar itself it worth the trip- beautiful and authentic. The wait staff and bartender were friendly and welcoming. I can't forget to comment on the delicious fries with their special dipping sauce! I wouldn't hesitate to go back next time I'm in Philadelphia!
