5/14/2022 - My homie and I made a cheesesteak fun run from Southern Maryland to Philly specifically to get sandwiches from Gooey Looies. This place is a secret spot more known to locals than the more popular tourist places like Pat's or Geno's & Tony Luke's plus is consistently good with decent prices and generous portions. The cheesesteak hoagie is always served piping hot and overflowing with steaky goodness. This time I also added an Italian hoagie that was equally delicious.Every time I have visited Philly in the last 12 years I have enjoyed a cheesesteak hoagie from Gooey Looies and I have yet to be disappointed. My issue is that they accept cash only. Oh and I'd prefer a little salt & pepper on my steak. Not a bad trade all things considered.
I no longer visit this establishment. To me, a 5 star establishment is one that has wonderful food..........but simultaneously has professional workers and a 90% pleasant atmosphere. This place had absolutely wonderful sandwiches. I mainly loved their hoagies. But the workers preparing the sandwiches were often VERY RUDE. As an African American customer, I never experienced racism here from no one. So they were polite in that regard. However, as I'd sit waiting for a sandwich or multiple sandwiches to get done, I'd have to listen to these loud and obnoxious workers preparing the food. Customers had to hear homophobic words, profanity and more. As an employee to any business, when dealing with customers, you have to put on a "professional front" and act nice. These workers were "On The Job Ghetto." In my opinion, "Ghetto" can apply to all races of people. And my reviews will be honest and spare NO RACE from my bad and/or good words. So this place had awesome food but they were unprofessional.
Prepare your treasure maps for this stop, we had a heck of a time finding it. Much like a treasure hunt though, when you find it...you'll feel far richer than you did before! I went with Cooper Sharp/wit', my son got a cooper sharp/without, and my other son and daughter got cheeseburgers. Gooey Looie's is tucked inside of a little area that looks like a mix of apartments and commercial rental units, but from nearly all sides except the parking lot it looks like a bunch of nothing. When we finally found this one we were very happy and excited to check it out. This is not your typical tourist trap location with a ton of lights and lines down the block. There were a few guys playing touchscreen gambling games and a few employees and that was that. It was...wonderful. When taking this steak in my hands it was like someone gave me a dumbbell. Very heavy steak sandwich and you could smell it through the bag. This was a more finely chopped steak than some in the area, depending on what you like that's either a good or bad thing. For me personally, I like both styles so I was happy one way or another. There was a ton of cheese on this steak to match the ton of meat. The bread was very solid, not ripping or falling apart at all. The onions were a small dice (which I love) and were cooked perfectly. All in all this was a really solid sandwich. I can't speak about the burgers but both my son and daughter said they enjoyed them. In the ballpark of $30 for two steaks and two burgers, great price in my opinion. This goes without saying...Gooey Looie's in Philly - Didn't Suck!
1st philly sandwhich recommend by my Lyft driver as I was a tourist when I was there: it was very yummy, Wish I would have tried more sandwiches! also thank you John for taking the pictures with us (:
Love this place!Rolls are softMeat tenderCan only eat a half...Worth the trip from the NE..
I had a taste for a good cheesesteak and my coworker told me about this place well I went and the cheesesteak was good I ordered another to go. I ate the first one in my car. I will go back I don’t know any other good cheesesteak place anybody got any clues? Although it’s far from where I live it’s closer to my job I’ll be getting another one friday.
Big cheesesteak with tons of meat. Chopped up well. Also quite juicy. Softer roll than other places, but not overly soft. Don't remember the cheese too much on the sandwich. Definitely a meat forward sandwich. Hard to find store in a small courtyard type area in a residential neighborhood. Takes cash only. Probably wouldn't go out of my way for this place, but would get my fix there if I lived in the neighborhood.
Great local cheesesteak joint that makes me proud to live in Philly!
Amazing quality sandwich and super filling. I definitely can eat this sandwich twice. The flavors are on point, and the meat is so juicy. The bread is so fresh and perfectly holds up with the moisture production of the flavor explosion of a sandwich.Unfortunately, places like this don't get the credit the deserve. Those tourist traps of other philly cheesesteak locations don't hold a candle. Hidden Gems are always better!
Great little spot!! Had a cheesesteak and an Italian cold cut. Both were huge and full of meat!
