Got there too late to eat upstairs so we sat outside. Ordering kiosks help speed things up and make it easy to customize your order. Had one steak with provolone and one with whiz. Both were really good. Waffle fries with cheese were also delicious. Not THE best but definitely up there at the top of the list. For sure the best in this part of the city.
Incredible cheesesteaks at this restaurant. I got the Effin' Hot Steak - it was delicious and pretty spicy. The portion size is huge so you can take leftovers like we did. Come check this place out!
(Last visited 8/22/2021.) Working in Philadelphia this week and it's time to eat! So doing some Yelp'ing downtown we got a bit overwhelmed. Lol. So Bae and I were walking around and we spotted a few couples eating outside and what we saw on their plate looked incredible. We asked them how it was and they said it was worth trying out. This was outside of a place called Cleavers so we went right on in! Atmosphere/Appearance: Set right on South 18th Street, downtown Philadelphia in the city center is this gem. It's near Rittenhouse Square and has a nice yellow sign out front that really grabs your attention. During this time the restaurant was carry-out only, but we were of course able to come in and order. This place is elongated with 2 floors. Downstairs is where the ordering counters and giant TV-sized menus are and upstairs is where you can take your meal, if it were open. The décor is really modern with a dab of rustic thrown in. The lights are bright so it doesn't feel very intimate or romantic. That's okay though. Service: The people behind the counter were very patient and helpful when it came to making sure I got exactly what I wanted from their giant menu. Food: So this place is known for its cheesesteaks, of course. They're made with ribeye and offer several variations, but because I'm weird... and was doing my best to watch my carbs, I strayed far away from the cheesesteak. Lol. I do regret this decision, but I went with the Effin' Hot Chicken, bowl. :-/ Yeah, judge me. Lol. The menu is extremely versatile. So what you do is pick a meal, then decide if you want it in a sandwich, a wrap or a bowl. Fairly simple. So I got my entrée in a bowl to get rid of the bread. The Effin' Hot Chicken is chicken, hot cherry pepper relish, fried onions, American cheese and sriracha aioli. So you can get the chicken grilled or with a chicken cutlet, which is breaded and fried. I opted for the grilled of course. There was no immediate heat, but it did build as I chewed. The cheese, onions and peppers all worked very well together. It wasn't too salty, but I would highly recommend getting this as a sandwich or wrap over a bowl. The bread would've helped with the flavor explosion that this provided. Value: Pretty good in my opinion. My bowl was only $12.25 and was quite filling, but if you got it in a sandwich, you'd get the same amount of filling... then with bread included! So yeah, sandwich, sandwich, sandwich. The cutlet version is $12.65... In conclusion, I loved this place and I look forward to returning here to try out some of their options... as sandwiches of course! Lol. Thank you for reading this far! Still hungry for more? Head on over to my YouTube channel, "The Hungry Road" and search for "Cleavers" to find the video I did on this place!
I've been to Philly a few times now and always I'm looking to find the Cheesesteak sandwich that meets the hype. I finally found it. This is the sandwich that dreams are made of. I would highly recommend going here. For those curious: Wiz, American, fried onions, roasted red peppers.
Nice little place with limited seating. Came on behalf of a recommendation. Cheesesteak, fries and shake were good. Huge portions!
The food is good. Fries are great.Expected some more sauces (like mayo or mustard) and vegetables (like peppers) in the sandwich, but it was big and juicy so totally worth it
My family of 4 and I were visiting Philly and met 2 friends here for dinner. We had a nice time catching up with great food, so I want to give props to Cleavers for this. What made it so good? Two things. First, if you're not looking for a "classic" Philly Cheesesteak and want to customize it your own way, the self-order screen is simple to you and provides dozens of options, from cheese, toppings, bread (or no bread if you're keto), and so on. With 2 semi-picky kids, they were able to add some unique things and take away the things they didn't like. Second, everyone said their sandwich tasted great. Well done, Cleavers.
I was visiting Philadelphia for the day and wanted to experience eating a Philly cheesesteak. I have no experience with cheesesteaks and was not entirely sure how to order one. This place has endless choices from the type of bread to the toppings you can add. I asked for the simplest cheesesteak they had. It was really good. It was also enormous. We eat it between two people and ended up feeling very full. Unfortunately I can’t really compare it to any other Philly cheesesteaks, because of my lack of knowledge. I wish I had asked for suggestions. However I was pleased with this location.
Food is amazing! We ordered “The Block’,” vegan “Porta Fresca,” sweet potato fries & carrot cake. We ordered online for pick up.When we arrived there were about four people in front of us we waited. When it came our turn, three other people (two groups) walked up to the left, the young lady cashier who should have taken us next, took the pick up orders on the left (no signage on that side to state pick up only). If she would have looked at us to acknowledge us or say please give me a moment, I would have told her we preordered just like them, but she didn’t, just ignored us and went to serve them. I had my phone up in my hand, just like they did and she saw we had waited in line. Secondly, we walked from our hotel about eight blocks, they gave us a flat taped bag., but we needed to carry it, young man advised me it’s a dollar & charged me for my carry out online order bag. That’s fine, but if I order carry out, please put my order in a carry out bag. I saw other orders in carry out bags, not sure how they judge that, but they should put all carry out orders in carry out bags (makes sense). We got a few blocks away & I thought I better double check order because our bag seemed too flat for what we ordered. Sure enough, they forgot the dessert. So we walked back, let them know and the young lady apologized and got the cake from the fridge. When you order take out, suggest ordering your meat and especially vegan options be boxed and bread separate. Otherwise you have soggy bread. The actual taste of the food was awesome! We were a little disappointed in the temperature for take out, but that was due to the wait and then having to return. Restaurant was clean, I’d say the young man was super friendly and enjoyed his work, but needs to work on accuracy of reading order, the receipt had the carrot cake in a darker color, I’m guessing to give them a heads up it needed to come from fridge, it was in a brown paper bag in fridge with my name on it. The young lady super efficient, but needs to actually deal with customers in front of her or at least acknowledge and let a customer respond, before serving someone else. They would have received 5 stars for food and 2-3 for service, accuracy and signage.
We went here for dinner and I had my first ever cheesesteak. We wanted to sit upstairs, but it was full, so we went and ate in at the other side of the restaurant. The food was tasty, the service was great, and we had a seat at a bar which had a view of the street so we got to do some great city people watching. I would come back for the next trip!
