What a hidden gem. Set just outside the Salem Municipal Airport, model airplanes hanging from the ceiling and good quality food. The clubhouse was by far my favorite clubhouse sandwich in a long time. The kids plates, are actual frisbees they can take home. Would recommend and will be returning for sure.
Food tasted amazing and the cheif personally asked us how the meal was as we were leaving. This is the first time a restaurant has done such a thing so it showed me that they really do care about the quality and service. The staff were also enjoyable and witty always making sure we had what we needed as well.
Now this place may not be everyone's cup of tea but I like it. For me brings back memories of the small restraint in Orange county John Wayne Airport back when John Wayne was still around. The food never disappoints. They do the best fried chicken at dinner. If you are in for lunch get the chicken tenders. Now I know chicken tenders. Well the breading they use is like no other. Light thin crispy full of flavor and the chicken is juicy. I can honestly say the best fried chicken I've ever had. I'm no fan of fried food so we'll its great. My wife had the Salmon and she said it was prepared better than a much more expensive restaurant we went to just a week earlier. They have a full bar with all the classic drink and they're own cocktails. "The Flight Attendant" was a good one. I've had a lot on their menu and never been disappointed. Its typical American cuisine but w their own specialties. Coll throw back small airport feeling with cool model planes hanging from the ceiling.
I wanted to like this place. I've heard good things about it before. It's a gorgous setting overlooking the airport. You can watch a plane take off or land. Now onto the food...The Shepard's pie was one of the most foul tasting dishes I've tried dining out. Canned peas and green beans, instant potatoes, and the gravy... let me tell ya. The flavor overpowered the entire dish with its salty putrid taste. Some shredded cheese on top and they popped it into the microwave for several minutes and made the cheese all crusty around the bowl. The crab mac n cheese had a decent flavor, but the crab was cold in it. The pieces of crab meat on top; almost frozen cold. After a few bites I just couldnt do it anymore. The mac n cheese wedges are huge. About the size of 2 pieces of pie stacked together. Hard to eat them as they fall apart. There was 4 tables of people eating when we were there and it took about 45 minutes to get our food. Seemed quite a long time for some packaged/canned food put in a bowl and microwaved. The onion rings were good. The waitress was very nice and pleasant to deal with. The place was clean except for the dust alligators on the airplane decor. Maybe it was just an off night? Who knows. Probably wont be back
Everyone loved their meal, super huge portions. There was a mixup and mine came out cold. They didn't want to reheat as it would have overcooked it. They offered to make me a new one but i just boxed mine up for home and shared my husbands. Worked out fine. The waitress was very sweet.
While this restaurant provides a nice view of the runway and planes, the food left much to be desired. The burgers were dry with absolutely no sauce on them. The side of tots that comes with the burger was a very small handful. For the price I definitely expected more. The staff were very friendly though.
Enjoyed the view, the service. And the salad
I had a tasty chicken salad for lunch. Great service, nice view of the airport. It was busy during lunch.
Hubby and I have been in Salem for 9 years and never visited the Flight Deck...Salem is not known for having many good breakfast restaurants, sadly..so first timers there.Of course, the glass wall overlooking the tiny airport is part of the experience. The service (Ashley H.) was very friendly and cheerful...always appreciate the cheerfulness in breakfast dining...We had the chicken fried steak with eggs and hash browns. I recommend the LITE portion - it is gargantuan! But, for me the BISCUIT was over the moon....it's mini-loaf-bread-sized! and good! Hubby and I brought half of all of our plate home with enough for another breakfast...I told hubby to bring me biscuits from Flight Deck for my birthdays instead of cake...we will return -
Needed a quick dinner after visiting the B-17 Alliance. Plenty of parking was available. Two servers to serve a moderately busy early evening crowd, but it seems most are "regulars" and there is a casually friendly atmosphere. As a vegetarian there were only a few items available, but they do offer a veggie patty option for their burgers (yay!). The grilled cheese sandwich was done"just right," served piping hot, and the tater tots were crisp and crunchy. The coffee was also good, not the over-roasted flavor so prevalent in many restaurants these days. We enjoyed our meal - hope you do, too.
