Best chicken schnitzel in PDX and great beer. Scenic views of the St. John’s bridge and West Hills. A little pricey though!
Went to dinner with another couple and really enjoyed it. We had the schnitzel, schweinebraten, and a couple of the wursts. Good German beer selections. Everything was very good. Servers were helpful and friendly. It's quite a ways from home but we'll be back.
Second time here in three days. How the conversation went:“Where should we go? I want something good but we’re not all that familiar with the area.”“That German restaurant was really good. And they have a great beer selection.”“Yeah. I could really go for some German beer; let’s do it!”It did not disappoint! Wish we had a place like this in Phoenix that was closer to where we live .
The food was okay, but nothing special. While you are meant to bus your own table, it would be nice if the staff could get their nose out of their smart phones to actually clean the tables. When we sat ourselves, the table was cleared, but filthy.Don't expect staff to be bothered to help you navigate the menu if you are unfamiliar with it.First timers will swim or sink on your own.Just in case you are interested, they do have condiments, to go boxes and other helpful things that you will not be told about by staff. One would think and this may be petty, but if a Bundesliga match is on TV, maybe a German restaurant would have it on instead of the Hulk.I would not recommend, nor will we be going back anytime soon.We took mom out for mother's day, and left disappointied.
Delicious food, fresh beer, and views of the St. John's Bridge make this an absolute must stop in Portland.
Great place for wurst! Husband said its his l favorite German place around. I had the roast beef which was a little tough and needed a bit more flavor. But I think if you stick to their namesake you can't go wrong. Good German beers on tap and many more in bottles around. We will definitely be back.
Having lived in Germany for 10 years, I have desperately sought places near where I live in Southern California for -decent- German food, only to be sorely disappointed. Having visited with friends in Oregon for Spring Break/my birthday (month), I asked ahead for places to go that might meet my expectations. UGW did just that. The food was what I had been missing these past three decades, and the service was what it needed to be. The ambience--wooden furniture, Bayernisch pennants, Volksmarch mugs on shelves--all reminded me of what was once home to me. When I go back, I will definitely be back at UGW for more. Sehr gut! Ausgezeichnet!
If I was in walking distance I'd probably visit fairly often... Not quite "drive across town" level. They have a pretty good vegan sausage for my vegetarian.
Beer is great, food and beer is counter style and not a waitress or open tab..
Totally decent wursthaus! Nothing all that flashy, but all of the beers were German or European. They have good vegan options and the sausage was all well prepared. The sauerkraut was good and there were three different condiment options including a curry ketchup. If the weather is good, the outdoor seating has great views of the bridge and park across the river.
