Sweet Street BBQ tastes like Mississippi to me, and for a Looziana Boy that's pretty close to down home. When my Chicken Plate arrived the first good sign was a slice of white bread. Now I noticed some folks reviewing Sweet Street seem to use this as some kind of Gris Gris curse signifying culinary calamity, but a slice of white bread has an honored place in the bbq world. Besides being basically traditional, white bread can do some serious sopping of that fantastic slathered bbq sauce, and the pot likker at the bottom of those collard deserves to be sponged up too. This Chicken Plate came with three big, fat wings smoked just right, and the meat was so tender made me just put my whole face into em. Wayne called out from the truck to see if I needed more napkins or one of those moist wipes, but I just kept ferociously lickin' my fingers and hands like I had lost my mind. My wife later noticed that I had a bit of sauce on my glasses, and that didn't go over well, seeing as my walk up Alberta was supposed to help me lower my A1C. I tried to make the case that the collards kind of, you know, protect me. Don't they? BBQ Beans were killer, and I suppose giving me the fiber that Lord Knows I need. Backing up all this was a kombucha from Conscious Sedation, a beer and cider cart in the same pod. After demolishing this very budget Chicken Plate ($9), I really admired the thoughtful inclusion of two toothpicks and a moist wipe for the hands. So much appreciate the people that moved up from the South many years ago and not only brought their food traditions but now preserve them and offer them to those of us who will pay attention.
I was SO excited to try this place yesterday. I ordered the BBQ chicken meal and received three very small, very skinny chicken wings soaked in bbq sauce. The collard greens were soaked and sad. The potato salad was... ok. It was the most substantial part. The "cornbread" was a slice of white Wonder bread. The two other carts in this pod i've eaten at were far better so I won't be back.
I ordered a red tip dinner and it was dry and burnt and old and also it wasn't enough for the money that I had paid and the beans and ground beef was stale like days old.
This is my #1 spot for BBQ ribs in Portland. Mouthwatering. Delicious. The service is excellent, prices great, and you really have to try their baked beans...OMG! The recipes are all handed down from long ago, so you can rest assured- these gals know what they're doing. And I can't forget to mention that the portions are huge! I love this place.
I’m from the south so I know good bbq and this is it!!! The pork ribs were juicy and saucy. And the staff were so sweet I will definitely come back and tell my friends!!!
