My husband and I have visited this shop 3 times in the last 11 days we've been visiting Portland. They're coffee and bagels alike are AMAZING. Such good flavors and a good variety of sandwiches.
Seemed like a promising bagel joint. Unfortunately, either the person who took our order or the person who prepared it, got 2 of 3 items incorrect. Ordered scallion cream cheese got regular cream cheese. Ordered whitefish, got whitefish sandwiched between two layers of cream cheese (is this a thing and I was supposed to say hold the cream cheese?). The bagel with lox and tomatoes does in fact have both; and that's something. We didn't think to open and inspect until we got home so no chance to get it corrected. Maybe better luck next time?
What's the deal with Spielman's? They're slightly below decent and that's putting it nicely. First of they have a major e-commerce problem. A janky user interface making it very difficult to place an order on their site. 50% of the the time they're open they will say they're closed, same goes for using a 3rd party service like Door Dash. Other times they will accept the order but cancel and refund it 30 minutes later with no reason even though the order was placed well within operating hours. Other instances include replacing the entire order with something else due to lack of ingredients and no means of being able to alter this or perhaps make a modification to the change they are "recommending" as is the case with other restaurants in the area. See picture of my originally intended Reuben. In terms of quality they're decent for a Portland Bagel shop. Definitely not in the same stratosphere resembling a New York bagel but that is expected on the west coast. Their bagel sandwiches are usually well assembled but altogether taste bland and lacking a distinctive taste. If you are craving a mouth watering egg/cheese/bacon bagel sando I recommend taking your appetite down to 21st for a much better experience.
Ordered a tuna bagel sandwich. When I realized I hadn't specified a bagel, and realized I hadn't been asked, I tried getting one of the employees attention. The person who came over seemed bothered and I asked if I could have an everything bagel please. When I got my order it ended up being a completely different bagel sandwich than I ordered, and the egg was one of those eggs that you heat up in the microwave. A sub par experience. Too bad, I live in the neighborhood and I love bagel sandwiches. Taking recommendations
It’s rare to find a place where you get the same exemplary service whether you are ordering the most expensive item to the least, however I ordered a bag of day old bagels this morning and was talked through every bagel in every bag with care and patience (and no I didn’t ask them to do this). They even offered to take one of them out and slice it for me when I mentioned I planned to eat it for breakfast. I will absolutely be coming back.
bagel itself was good. i wish i had just got the toasted bagel with cream cheese because i could have really appreciated the bagel.
The staff are great and the food is good but management needs to step up. A busy morning, the store is full of customers and there's only 2 people working, they're trying hard to keep up but what if they need to take a break or use the restroom? Also, I placed an online order and it took 15 min just for my order to be received by the system, don't know if it was a glitch or what but their online ordering needs an update. Again, staff is wonderful but store is systematically flawed.
First time trying this place. The bagels we had were good. Definitely the New York style boiled bagel. But hey guys, time to reopen indoor dining. Having to sit on the curb to eat your bagels outside takes away from the experience. That's the reason for 4 stars, the food is 5 star, having to find somewhere else to enjoy it, is a major disappointment.
Wait staff allowed someone to cut in line while we were trying to order, then ASKED us for a tip during our order. As a black person in a white space this made me feel very unwelcome. Will not be returning. This is my second visit and each time was met with the same behavior.
It's impossible to get a bacon breakfast bagel here. I got an Egg and Cheese with Bacon - no bacon. The next time I came in the menu was updated so that it was literally called a Bacon Breakfast Bagel - sausage....The bagels are good, the only reason stars are lost is that I've only ever gotten good food that I didn't want. Staff is nice.
